Does anyone have experience with removal of the stock airbox? I like the look of the K&N three filter setup (available from Jack Lilley), but my dealer has advised against it for practical reasons, including reliability, carb adjustment (especially the middle carb), etc. Instead, my dealer suggested going with the K&N replacement filter, and keeping the stock airbox. Thanks for any and all input.

Removing the airbox is not difficult, it just takes a while. The tank, side panels, primary airbox and carbs have to come off first.

You could have the hole lot off in half hour or so.

I think you might have a problem fitting a K&N, the newer airboxes appear to have screws designed not to undo.

The pod filter route is really not an easy option, unless you are willing to spend a lot of time stripping the carbs and changing jets until you get it right. It would be fairly pointless really as the TBS inlet cam is not designed to flow large volumes of mixture.

Slinky,

Thanks for the informative reply. My concern is not just performance, but style. I really dislike the look of the airbox on an otherwise beautiful bike. I just recently put the D&D three into three exhaust on, so work has to be done on the carbs anyway. In fact, I may put new cams in over the winter, so I think I'm headed in that direction too. I'm going to talk to the service guy at my dealer....I'll post photos when almost complete. Still awaiting single cowl seat and retro fairing from fabbri.

One thing that is worth considering is the effect that the changes that you are considering will have on your warranty.
If the dealer says tht it is 'ok' get it in writing, so that if something goes wrong, you have some comeback on them.

Yeah, but getting the flipping thing back on can be a real pain in the neck!

I just re-assembled the whole thing last night after changing the jets (again...) - it's a very tight fit to get the carbs/airbox/2nd airbox back in, and the parts don't line up all that well. A lot of sweating & cursing involved... :-D

Spoke with the dealer and ordered the pod kit. Got a reasonable deal from a small dealer in NY. Almost half the cost of Jack Lilley. I've ordered a jet kit from FactoryPro. Also, the warranty issue is ok, but I'll get it in writing. That will change when I do the cams over the winter.

for all the info' you'll need on cams, airbox etc:
click on 'web links' on the left side of the page, then 'Triumph group sites', then 'Blaine Kuemichel's Thunderbird tuning site'.
