I want to upgrade my 99 TBS rear wheel from a 4,5" rim to " something bigger"
Any good ideas?

I did a lot of research trying to fit a wide rear on my T-bird. Here are your options;

Buchanan Spoke

They quoted me $375 for the rim, $109 for the spokes and $90 for lacing, plus shipping both ways. I believe they also charge to break your old wheel down.

The second option is to lace your hub to a Harley Davidson rim using an odd spoke pattern. See Rokki's posts

The third option is to swap in cast wheels from a different model bike.

Look around the super motard racing folks. You may have a local shop that has done a few. Since it is dirt bike based (largely) check out the dirt bike shops as well.

Also consider BMW & Moto Guzzi rims. They are usually a tubeless design, even for spokes.

Hi John,

SBF in Germany use to offer a 5.5" x 17" rear wheel for the Thunderbird Sport. (Unfortunately I cannot see it now on their site, but it may be worth contacting them?).

CWC (Central Wheels) here in the UK supply Triumph with their spoked wheels, and I am sure their wheel building service will be able to help you. I have used them on wheels for another bike, and they are excellent. They should be able to match up a wider rim to the same finish as your front wheel (chrome or alloy).

Ciao,
Geoff

I've seen alloy 3 spoke wheels on a TBS.

2 Qs:
1)Can you just bolt them on?
2)Which bike do they come from?
Tnx

Hi senyorsimon,

There are many people on this site better qualified to answer you but as I am just in the process of converting mine I'll start the ball rolling.

There are two routes that I know of that you can take. One is Kawasaki, the other Daytona/S3. After months of looking (and buying the wrong parts) I am now halfway through fitting Daytona forks and wheels. It's very important you get the parts from the right bike, I think it's the 94 to 96 (carb) models with 43mm forks. Others on this site will give more precise information.

You will also need to change the front calipers and the rear rotor. Most people seem to go for the 6 pot tokico on the front but I've gone for the 4 pot ST1050.

I've also heard of some people keeping the TBS forks and using spacers.
