I have a 2002 t/bird with 15,000 trouble free kms,until now.I recently fitted Staintune mufflers and since then I've had a problem.I think that it's probably a coincidence,but I could be wrong.
Sometimes when I'm moving off or slowing at a junction, with revs in the 2,000 rpm area, the engine momentarily cuts out.
It usually lasts just a fraction of a second and the engine keeps running. It only happens at those low revs. It's an intermittent problem. The bike pulls well and shows no problem above 2,000 rpm.
The other day it happened when I was pulling away into a line of traffic. The engine stopped that time and left me sitting there with cars approaching. Not my idea of a fun time.
Took the bike out for a 100 km run today and it played up a few times. Then while the bike was idling for a minute the engine cut out.It fired up instantly arter hitting the starter button. It idles at a steady 1,000 rpm and has a newish battery.
Any ideas on what could cause this would be most welcome.

It sounds a little like the igniter pickup coil but that is usually heat related. I wouldn't think you would get a restart until after a cool down.

Maybe the kickstand switch or kill switch or bad wiring connections somewhere?

Ignition switch?

I had the same problem and pinpointed it to a faulty coil,it only happened when the bike was warm and it would only re start if i switched the ignition off and on again. Ede :-D

The low rpm problem points toward either weak spark (coils) or a weak battery -- it could be either one.

At low rpm the bike is running from the battery since the alternator isn't putting out an appreciable amount of power so if the battery is weak, failing, or low on fluid you'll get that symptom.

Check the battery fluid and top with distilled water as required, clean and grease the battery terminals and see if the problem continues.

If it's not the battery it's either the ignition coil(s), tired spark plugs, loose/corroded coil primary wires or loose/corroded sparkplug wires.

Check the battery first and go from there...

Thanks for the replies,a great help. The coils seem the most likely cause so will check the connections and leads. Will take a gamble and buy a coil if everything looks ok.
The battery is only a couple of months old and has fluid to the right level.

Another thing to check (and an easy one) is to apply some choke and see if the bike runs better at low rpms.

If so, you could have dirty pilot jets in the carbs.

My 96 Adventurer was very prone to something similar last year. Cold starts, fine, running along at speed, fine, but slow for a junction and the revs dropped off to 0 and it kept stalling. It got so bad sometimes I ended up doing a strange hand movement to pull the brake and keep the throttle open.

After a lay up of a few weeks I found it wouldn't start, checked the plugs, sooty as anything, fresh plugs and a nagging 'why where they that bad?'...made it 50 yards from home before a couple of very loud bangs and no power at all......

Turned out to be a pretty much completely blocked air filter. Once the mechanic at Turn One (local independent near to me) had looked at it, got a new filter in, it ran and still runs sweet as a nut.

We are theorising here, a build up of dust coupled with some damp weather had made some sort of concrete mix in the filter fibres. But, as I say it's sorted, so it might be worth a nose at the air supply as well as the electrics.

Mr Greebo is correct, we should check the basics first before blowing big wads of money.

MY TBS had the same problem this spring. I found that the #2 plug was loose. After I tightened it the problem went away. I hope it's this simple for you.

yee-haa, it's fixed!!!.Put the standard mufflers back on today to find out if the Staintunes were the cause.Although it was better, the problem remained, after checking all connections.
New spark plugs fixed it.The ones in there looked ok but one must have been breaking down at low rpm.
The Staintunes are back on now and I've got a 'smile on me dial' :-D .
Thanks for the suggestions.
