A friend at work was not looking behind him very well when he backed his SUV into my parked Legend.

All the damaged parts look easy to replace,, except the rear fender.

Parts ordered (and paid for by the SUV guy).

Anyone have any experience and/or tips or replacing the rear fender?

Don't sweat it Tom, it's an easy enough job. I have a TBird, but the process should be exactly the same. I had to mess around with the fender when I swapped over the rear sub-frame on my bike.

There are four Torx head screws which hold the fender to the top of the frame (under the seat). Depending on the model you have, the captive nuts will either be attached to the frame or to the fender itself. I think the later models have them attached to the fender.

Older models also have another two Torx screws holding the fender to the frame. These are located towards the front end of the fender about 4" up from the swing-arm. There are also a couple of bolts holding the plastic splashguard - the bit between the edge of the fender and swing-arm. If your replacement fender comes 'bare' i.e. without the plastic section, you'll need to drill out the rivets which connect the plastic splashguard to the old fender. From memory, I think the rivets are about 6mm, so you'll need a pop rivet gun.

The only other things which hold the fender on are the two Allen headed bolts on the chrome/alloy indicator mounting brackets.

Last thing you need to do is disconnect the wiring for the indicators, rear light and licence plate light. Just unbolt the items and feed the wires through the appropriate points in the new fender.

If this all sounds like a lot of work, it isn't - you'll find it is quite straightforward.

BTW: What labour rate are you charging the guy with the SUV?

Thanks for the info,

I'm pretty sure the fender comes bare, but it is painted.

Sounds like it a pretty straight forward project with no hidden demons :-)

Local shop wants $400. to do everything. Not charging the SUV guy, I think her learned his lesson. I've known for a few years and he's an allright guy.

Ride safe
