you dont need a kit unless you cant afford to be without the bike for a day or two.

In most cases you can reuse the shims that come out (swap them around) and only end up needing a couple them. so what you do is measure the gaps, pull the shims and measure them, work out the size of the required shims, swap around where possible and order what you don't have. The only downtime is the turnaround time for shipping or a visit to the dealer. any good dealer shoudl have them on the shelf in the shop.

If your Triumph dealer is too far away take a shim along to any local Japanese bike dealer as the same shims are used on other makes.

Hi Mick,

Thanks for the reply. We had emailed about a ping I was getting on the 2-1 side. I tried high temp RTV as I went with the exhaust leak first..no change. I'll do a quick valve adjust as it has 7K on it and the valve case has never been off. If that dead ends, I'll richen up the mixture as I am getting some bluing but the bike is running great so I hate to mess unless needed. Still the ping is loud but only coming out one side but there is little to no noticeable valve noise or lash.

Well you wont get noise or lash as it were as the valves close up as they wear on these OHC engines, but 7k means the bike is due (or was under the original service intervals) for a valve check.

Those exhaust leaks can be a pig to fix - I had one it was kind of a chirping it took several attempts to stop it. In fact on reflection I'm not sure I fully cured it, it may have just gone away after I switched to the off road pipes. It was at the joint between the muffler and the header.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

I buy my 25mm TB shims by post from Jack Lilley ordered over the phone. JL are absolutely brilliant and deliver in a couple of days in the UK.

Last time I bought 2x 2.7mm shims for the inlet valves on the middle pot and they cost me £2.20 each ($4.14 USD) - from memory.

Thanks for the reply.

I did a valve check last night....they were well within spec. In the hanes manual it noted that you can get a ping from a predetonation from a # of sources....carbon build up...(doubtfull), wrong plugs...I pulled and all trhee looked great...gap was fine....fuel/air mixture. Maybe. When I bought the bike the numbskull had left gas sitting in it for years and I had to pull the carbs a couple of times to clean, de-funk. I actually replaced one of the floats.

The bike is running great but if the mixture was off on one bank, even slightly, would this cause this ping? If so, is it casued by being too lean or too rich? don't have a set of gauges to check mixture. Any suggestions?
