Im almost embarrased to ask, but after having collected my TBS today :-D , I find I cant remove the seat.

Before anyone asks, I have inserted and turned the key (in the side panel). Im daft, but not that daft.

I can get the seat releases and it moves about, but I cant seem to get it off. Is their some sneaky mechanism underneath that I have to play with.

Which way does it come off. I assume that the rear must lift first?

I am a noob :hammer: , I know, but can anyone please let me know what I am doing wrong.

Regards

Dave

Yep it's tricky. Once the latch is released, slide it back a bit and then it will lift upward.

When you eventually get the seat off, take a look at where the lock mounts to the airbox.

It's pretty common for the box to crack and break in that area so it might need replacement or repair. If that happens the lock will shift and not give enough 'pull' on the cable.

A friend had a problem on her bike in that the screws had pulled loose. I fixed it with a couple of LARGE sheet metal screws (#10 or #12 and about 2" long) driven through the airbox. If you do this, don't drill the box first. Let the plastic spread around the screws and they'll hold better.

NOT a dumb question- I had to give my '04 seat a pretty good yank to the rear. It doesn't exactly jump back on either! I tried tweaking the brackets a little (04TBS) might have helped- a little.

[edit] just saw you have a 99- I think they are hinged- "ignore the man behind the screen" now I'M embarassed

thanks guys, got it off. all it needed was a good tug. Havent tried to refit yet, but where does the toolkit live?

I dont think it has one, but I can exactly see where it would go either

Thanks

Dave

I believe the toolkit was an option. On the bottom of the seat mine has a small spot that holds a few necessary tools. Previous Owner had the deluxe tool kit included with mine.

rickj, I believe the seat attachment is the same for all TBS.

None of the Hinkley Classics have hinged seats as did the earlier Meriden models.

I believe some of the TBS seats are key operated and some are bolt on.

Does your have a bolt on seat?

the '04 is the only year I have not seen up close, all the others have the locking seat.

Yes it does. I stand corrected.
Must be the NON TBS models that have the bolt on seat.

Denny, really?

My understanding was that all the post-'99 TBSes had a bolt-on seat, hence the various accessory seats being either '98/99 or '01+.
