One of my silencers is rattling, the bracket that is fixed to the silencer by 2 allen bolts is loose, I've several read posts on here that people have had trouble with the captive nuts coming loose when you try to tighten the bolts, any tips before I start? Thought of spraying loads of WD40 aroung them & leaving that to loosen them? Can the nut be replaced if the come loose?

cheers, Neil.

If they are like mine you can take off the foot peg and then remove the unit from the header.

Don't know if that helps any. Good luck.

My dealer says to heat the bolts which will loosen the thread sealant. The bolt should be easy to back out without breaking the nut loose from inside the silencer. Just a thought. Hope this helps. I haven't tried it yet.

Same advice from my local dealer.
Haven't tried it myself but it makes sense, Triumph do love the thread sealant.

heat is your best bet, wd 40 wont do much. If the nut comes loose you will have problems - its a rivnut type of affair that is fitted into the silencer. If it breaks away from the silencer itself it just spins and there is no easy way to hold it short of drilling a small strategic hole right through the bracket and silencer and into the nut into which you can inset a steel pin. this only works sometimes.

My guess is you may be lucky and be able to nip up the bolts - just dont try to undo them first.

Has your bike got the stock mufflers ot the Triumph off-roads?

the silencers ae stock, not sure I'd like to apply heat tho, although its probably the best way to do it, I'll try & tighten them when I'm in the mood!!!!

You only need enough heat to soften the threadlock compound -- just too hot to touch and not enough to discolor or the metal.

Apply the heat slowly so it has time to conduct through the bolts to the threads.

Hi Lancashirelad,

I have had this problem myself. The problem is caused to some extent by the bolts being too long and poking into the exhaust gases and getting carboned up. This makes them very tight when you come to undo them. I loosened mine a couple of turns, sprayed WD40 and tightened them up again gently. Repeat as necessary till you can get them all the way out. This should work ok if they are already loose.

I agree that the Loctite type stuff they use doesn't help but take it gently and they should come out ok.

If they don't and you do end up with a spinning riv nut you will have to grind the head off the bolt. Once you have the bracket off the riv nut can be fixed by using a pillar drill with a small drill bit to drill through the silencer into the riv nut then inserting a pin covered in araldite. Once the glue is set grind the pin down flush. Then you can use either a pair of mole grips to get the shank of the bolt out or hacksaw a slot in it and use a screwdriver.

This has worked very successfully for me.
