Have replaced the stock coils on my fathers 02 legend after one cylinder fell out. It seem to fixed the problem (I used the new and improved coils!) now it is an intermitant problemwith one cylinder falling out then comming back on and almost throwing the rider. Triumph says a possible black box called a something or other 700.00... any help? we have tried other forums to know avail. I ride with him and routinely kick his butt on the twisties in my triple but would like to say I did it with out his cylinder falling out. Sean....

I'd check the plug wires first. The connectors on both end should give audible clicks when they're plugged in and the connectors themselves should be shiny. If they're discolored, replace the wires. If you're not hearing 2 or 3 clicks when plugging them in the boots may have shifted on the wire and are preventing proper engagement.

While you're at it, check for loose sparkplugs. That can give the same symptom.

Check the low voltage connectors to the coils next. You should have three wires of the same color going to the coils and those should go to the frame side of the coils. Reversed wire connections could cause a weak spark.

Check the the coil terminals for discoloration. A dark color or spot may indicate a loose connector that's arcing.

Check the connector to the igniter box also and look for dark-colored terminals that could indicate heating or arcing in the connector.

Good answer. I had a problem like this on my t bird and I finally cleaned the plug wire connections (on the wires themselves) with a bronze bore bristle brush (for cleaning guns) and that seems to have fixed the prob. no more missing for the last 300 miles.

... by the way I think it was a 30 caliber brush and I just chucked it in my electric drill, then stuck it right in the boot.
