I have a friend who is having starter problems with his thunderbird. From what i can get the sprag clutch isn engaging, he has had the starter out of the bike and said it checks out fine. He has been told that he has to pull the motor to fix the problem.

I want to know if there is a easy fix or something he could try before pulling the motor.

Thanks Greg

Poker (I don't even know her!!)

If you check the "downloads" section on the left side of the page I think there is some detailed information on the Sprag.

Also try an advanced search. Good luck

If the engine is cranking briefly followed by a noise that sounds like two hammers being hit together and then some more of the craiking... You might have a bad sprag.

if the starter is spinning freely and not engaging the engine... You might have a bad sprag.

here is the skinny

0) buy workshop manual!!
1) explore all other possibly causes! (Big job,not impossible)
2) pull the engine
3) split the cases.
4) contact dealer order/ wait for parts.
5) install new sprag.
6) mate crankcase halves.
7) install engine.

more details
