My Legend was becoming harder and harder to start. Same old problem with the coils. Had a new battery installed and one coil replaced. Starts right up but with a little heat on the engine the low rpm stumble returned. I had another new coil as a spare (can't seem to have too many of these lying around) so decided to swap out the last one to see if the stumble would stop. I discovered that two of the coils had the green and brown going to the positive contacts and the one that had been replaced had the green and brown wire going to the negative contact. I was under the opinion that all three "like" wires went to the positive contacts. Am I wrong? Assuming that I am right will running it wired up backward, on this one coil, cause the coil to fail? Assuming the other two are wired correctly could this new coil be causing the return to stumbling at low rpm? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have 43,000 miles on this bike with no problems except these d--n coils.

All three coils should be wired the same way. The same-colored wire (red on my bike) should go to the frame side of the coil and the different-colored wires should go to the side of the coil away from the frame.

Reversing the polarity on a Kettering-type ignition coil will cause a weak spark.

I don't know what reversing a coil on the Gill ignition will do, but I'd switch it back to the proper connection and check the spark plugs. If the one connected to that coil is darker than the rest or fouled it will need to be cleaned or replaced.

Thanks for the info. Can't check the plugs because they are new. Can't ride far because it's raining here (first time in about 45 days.) I changed the third coil and rode a short distance and it seemed better but won't know for sure until I can ride some distance. The problem seems to get worse when the bike gets up to operating temp. I think I will bite the bullet and just get a set of Nology coils and be done with it. I did swap the wires so all are the same.
