Just purchassed a 96 TB. I'm looking at doing some servicing myself before taking it in for a tune up. I have a couple of questions.
To change the plugs, center one anyway, do I need to remove the rocker cover.
Where exactly are the mixture screws? What do they look like.
This bike is starving at anything over 6000rpm. On inspecting the air intake I found a piece of foam rubber restricting the air intake. Bewdy, removed it and it ran a lot better up top but laggy in mid range AND the pipes went very blue very quickly. Freak. Put the foam back in. Obviously running VERY lean without it. So to richen up the mixture I need to adjust the mixture screw but can't see/find them. A picture would be nice.
The bike has the after market off road pipes on it. Has done only 13,000klms and is in very good condition, so I have no idea why it runs like this, and who would have put the foam in there.
Thanks

To remove the plugs, you need to remove the gas tank and that is about all. I use a ratchet attached to the tool for the plug and it works fine.
The mixture screw are located under the car bank. You should be able to find pictures in the photo albums here. If they are unplugged, you will need to remove the carbs unless you have a fancy screwdriver.

Foam rubber in the inlet? That's a new one...
Your air filter box should have a single inlet on the left side that's about 1-1/2" diameter.
The pre-filter airbox is located under the left side cover under the seat and should have a single inlet about the same size that runs behind the battery to the other side cover.
Where exactly was the foam located?
I'm trying to figure out if someone has modified the air intake system and then tried to sort it out by sticking in the odd piece of foam. Once we get past that, we can work on the rest.

Get a manual ASAP and that will answer alot of these questions.
The Foam is strange unless it was a chunck of the OEM air filter?

Also, if the bike goes lean at 6k and up it won't do any good to tamper with the mixture screws. The only affects the mixture at idle and slightly over.
You have to put larger mains in and/or adjust the needle settings.

it was in the very first inlet into the pre-filter box, behind the battery. Just shoved in there.
Are there supposed to be any baffles in the pre-filter box? Mines just a big empty box!!
Thanks

got the manual - i can see where the mixture screws are now - not very accesable are they
The mystery of the foam - its just a piece of foam about 125mm x 45mm x 20mm. Rough cut and shoved into the inlet. I pulled it out after removing the seat.

Yeah, the '96 bikes had a foam rubber sleeve over the inlet to the primary air box. It never caused me any trouble.
What is the history of the bike?

this is just a piece of foam slightly folded and inserted into the 1 1/2" tube that runs into the airbox behind the battery. That tube hasd an insert that is foam lined but that takes the shape of inside of the tube wall.
The history. I bought it off a guy who was scared of it i think, he had done 8000klms in 4 years. He bought it off a rich guy who had heaps of cars and bikes and only rode it 4000klms in 6 years. I don't think either of these guys were speed demons.
