AAWWW NUTS!!
Fuelled the bike today. Went to reset the trip-o-meter and the twisty nob came off in my hand. :???:
Got home and a closer inspection revealed It had snapped inside the speedo housing and the rachet mechanism is rattling around in the casing. Are these things easy to get fixed? or am i looking at replacing. Anyone know the legal requirements for replacing speedometers in the UK? If the whole thing needs replacing its bye bye to the Staintune mufflers I was about to order.
Im hacked off now, everything is going wrong on my lovely bike since it turned over 40,000 miles. Maybe its a motorcycle mid life crisis!! :-D

As always, any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

Wayne

There is no legal requiremnt to have the trip meter working. IIRC there is also no requiremnt in the UK to have the odometer working either, so long as you dont try to claim the milage is genuine thereafter.

I'd check with a speedo repair shop. I used to work for a speedo manufacturer and they farmed the repair work out to speedo shops, so they do exist. It would have to be cheaper than buying a new speedo from triumph.

Since there is no fuel gauge I reset the trip every fuel up too. Mine did exactly the same thing about a year ago. I finally got around to repairing it a few weeks ago.

I used a small piece of rigid plastic tubing (cut from the clean end of a Biro ink reservoir) which i initially dobbed some epoxy resin in the end and slid over the broken spindle inside the tacho', being careful there wasn't too much resin to drip and cause problems. After an hour or two i cut back the knob so the here was no longer any spindly part, just the knob left and carefully drilled halfway into it with a drill bit just larger than the plastic tubing. Back to the trusty epoxy resin, I mixed up a fresh batch and put another dollop in the newly drilled whole, then popped it on the plastic tubing sitting just proud of the tachco'. Best to make this piece long to start with for ease of fitting then trim to your desired length. The shorter the better I assume to lessen the chances of snapping it again.

Voila!!!!! The trip' works better than before. :hammer: :-D

Oh yeah, don't be tempted to test the fix until you've left the resin plenty of time to cure. Even thhe 15 minute stuff hasn't really cured that quickly, it hhas just set. I'd recommend leaving it over night to make sure.

Good luck

You could always fit a bicycle computer and use the odometer function on that. Most of the German 'Sigma' range would be suitable as they can measure up to about 150mph IIRC.

I fitted a multi-function Sigma computer to the bars on my bike as it doesn't take up anymore space than a small digital watch. If you want to go this route, you'll need a small magnet fixed to the front wheel and a sensor attached to the forks (both supplied with the computer). However, it's better to use a 'rare earth' magnet from somewhere like 'Maplin Electronics'. These are much more powerful than normal types and need only be about 3mm or so in diameter.

The computer should only cost you about £15ish plus some time messing around fitting it. PM/email me if you want me to send you pictures of the installation on my bike.
