I ride a 2002 T'bird and have read the very helpful threads in this forum concerning the water temperature light earthing problem and how to correct it. Sorry to bring it up again, but I have not found what I expected to see and am unsure how to proceed.

Having had the tank off and located the wiring connectors in the headlight bowl (of which there are several), and then identified that for the instrument panel, the wiring doesn't correspond in colour or connector position to those shown in the Haynes manual or the Triumph service manual. I understand that I should be looking for a black/yellow wire on the instrument side and a black, or black/yellow, wire on the harness side. While I can find a yellow and black wire on the instrument side, there does not appear to be a corresponding black wire on the harness side. Nor is the black/yellow in the prosition shown in the manual wiring diagrams (position 8, according to the Triumph manual), and since the diagram shows two such wires anyway (the other at position 3), I don't know if I have found the correct wire in any event (it isn't in position 3 either!). I appreciate that both manuals only deal with models up to and including 1999, so it may be that Triumph changed the wiring colouring sometime thereafter.

Has anyone successfully tried this instrument earthing fix on a 2002 model or later and, if so, could they point me in the right direction?

You're looking for the wires that go to pin 8 on the instrument cluster connector.

Since you've found a wire on the instrument side that's black/yellow, then the other wire is the one that connects to the opposite side of the black/yellow. The connections are straight through from side to side.

If you look carefully at the connector there should be a '1' mark on the long sides at end or the other. There may or may not be other pin numbers on the connector.

There are lots of numbering schemes for connectors (L to R, zigzag, etc.) so just follow the ground wire from the instruments and the harness ground will be the corresponding wire.

My bike is also afflicted with this ailment, and I plan on correcting it tonight.

Is it necessary to cut the existing ground or can I add another ground wire to it by splicing into the existing ground with a connector?

Jim - thanks for this; your earlier contributions on this topic gave me the basis for tackling the job in the first place! I have now found the correct wire, the connector concerned was buried away at the very back of the headlight housing and completely taped over so I didn't recognise it for what is was.
