There's no easy answer to that one. That question usually ends up in a heated debate.

I use Halfords own brand 5w40 fully synthetic motorcycle oil, been using it for years in all my bikes & I can highly recomend it.

Ta. I was looking at the Castrol supreme gubbins @£30+ for v4 litres but Halfords own brand seems to do the same for £20.

Motul 5100 15w50. A lot of people like the mobil one. I have also used silkolene comp4 15w50. You poms would probably be better off using the 10w40. Even your summer is too cold for me.

I go with the Halfords home brew and its cheaper at the moment, £21.00 for 5 litres i think. They also have the 10/40 semi stuff anall.

Synchronistic that this issue should arise...

The July '06 issue of Motorcycle Consumer News has a question in the 'Downtime Files' section (pg.9), the shortened version of which follows:

Quote:
Is it okay to use Mobil 1 or other automobile oil in my bike, assuming I use the recommended grade (i.e. 15W50 synthetic or synthetic-blend for my Triumph Sprint ST)?

I keep reading...car oil has additives that may cause slippage in bikes with a wet clutch... I've alos read that only the "energy Conserving" oils... will actually cause slippage.

I want to buy the right oil...but there's no sense in paying $50 for a gallon of Triumph-branded oil if the $20 redcap Mobil1 will work just as well...
And the reply:

Quote:
You don't say how much mileage is on the bike, but if the engine is past break-in I would say change the filter and use the car oil. I have yet to see any clutch slippage problem on the dyno caused by Mobil 1 and I have seen hundreds of dyno runs with bikes using it.
Good Luck!

Jim

There was some discussion about the difference between "Red Cap" & "Gold Cap" Mobil One. can anyone enlighten me?
I have seen the gold cap at supercheap for less than 50 bucks, the bike mobil one is usually around 70

I run too run Motul 15/50, but I run it year round. Never usually ride in anything under freezing. RIght now we're at 30deg C.

Most important is to use 1) MOTORCYCLE oil as opposed to automotive oil as the automotive stuff has friction modifiers in it that can mess up the wet clutch and the motorcycle stuff also has high pressure additives for the gear box that the automotive stuff doesn't, and 2) a FULL synthetic as opposed to a belnd or partially sythetic. Again, for the wet clutch.

Without offending anyone, I can add this. I did a change yesterday on my "new to me" 96 Trident w/ Rotella 5-40 synthetic (Wal-Mart) because 1) I've read favorable reviews and 2) Wally world has been out of Mobil 1 15-50 (and 20-50) in the gallon jug for some time now. I did a 4 hour ride today. My impressions? The bike now shifts like a 70 BMW running a quart low. Pretty disappointed. Very clunky. So, tomorrow, I'm off to find some Mobil 1 (in expensive quarts no less) to do it right.

I've run the Rotella 5w-40 successfully in Winter, but come warmer weather mine started shifting clunky also. I normally use the Mobil one 15w-50 now gold cap previously red cap. If it has the energy saving logo on the back of the bottle I steer clear of it, no matter what the brand.

I change oil when the tranny starts shifting a bit harder, that's usually around 4000 miles.
