Just purchased a 2002 Thunderbird. Love the bike...hate the exhaust. The individual that I bought it from has the triumph off road (angle cut) exhaust on the bike. It wouldn't be so bad, but it appears that he has "punched" out the baffle ON ONE SIDE :hammer: The other side it looks as though he lost interest (signs of trying) . I have looked and found only Staintune ($$$) and Triumph replacements ($$)...any other choices out there that I am missing. Heck, I would sooner have the stock ones (he didn't have them). I have searched, but am running out of search criteria!

Thanks!
Brian

Hi Brian,

Don't know where you are located, but these folks would probablty be a good place to start. They may even have second hand originals if that is the way you want to go.

These folks here!

Are you sure the ones you have are TOR's (Triumph Off Roads)? I say that because you said they are angle-cut, and the TOR's are peashooters and stamped with Triumph "Not for roads" or somesuch. The angle-cut ones are a different manufacturer, I believe.

See this page for some options.

I have my stock peashooters punched out (on BOTH sides, that is), and am happy with the results.

One side will be louder than the other. One side has the flow from two cylinders, the other side only one.

I think the Adventurer off-road pipes were slash cut, maybe that's what you have.

Any place that sells part for old British bikes will have a good selection of mufflers you could use, the Tbird uses 1.5" mufflers. At worst you would have to make up a rear mounting bracket.

They are stamped with Triumph on them....not sure about "Not for Roads" I will check now that you mention it. Thanks for the website....this is what I have been looking for! You saved me some time!

I appreciate everyones assistance!!

One more thing. The bike has a"King/Queen" seat and I would like to get the standard stock seat. The seats that I have seen appear to have no rear bolts to hold the seat in place...looks like a "push to lock" set up on all of the stock seats that I have been looking at. The bike (once again) does not appear to have that set up. Did the 02 have a set up where you could use your key to release the stock seat....I have no manual yet (as you can tell with the questions...bought the bike this past Friday).

What a great forum...thanks for the help!

Early model TBirds had a different rear sub-frame (about 1" higher and with a locking type seat) than the later models. I think the change over was on the 1999 models - there were quite a few other changes at this time too.

You can generally find stock seats for sale on eBay (at least on the UK site). Most people much prefer the K&Q seat over stock as it is more comfortable on longer trips.

The official Triumph offroad mufflers are stamped "NOT FOR ROAD USE" and if you've got the 'slashcut' mufflers there's nothing to punch out since they're straight through.

I've got the slashcuts on Mutato so you can check my photo album (clicky below) for a picture to identify what's installed.

Just checked to see what I could find on the mufflers...here are the details...
Stamped with Triumph and "not for road use"....also appears to be a part number A9601018. They do appear to have some type of baffle...maybe it's just me. The right side (the side that looks like it was not - worked on appears to be MUCH quieter than the left side - worked on side.

I just checked and mine are stamped A9601019 and they're definately straight-through according to my broomstick! :-D

I don't remember hearing of Triumph putting out two versions of the slashcuts, but I guess that's possible...

It's also possible that you've got a 'California' exhaust system with a catalytic converter at the end of the exhaust pipe where it connects to the muffler rather than a baffle in the muffler itself and that's what the previous owner was trying to remove.

I'd pull off the 'good' muffler and take a careful look at the pipe and muffler -- some folks do wierd stuff to their bikes... :???:
