OK guys, I have a question. On my 1998 Adventurer, there is a small metal nipple or pipe at the rear of the gas tank on the left side near the seat. There is nothing connected to it.

What is it and should'nt it be connected to something? The only line I have that is not hooked up is a rubber hose that comes from the carburater bowl vents and hangs over the front of the carbs near the back of the engine. The other line from the vents is connected to the tip over valve.

Anybody out there with an Adventurer, care to take a look at your bike and let me know if mine is correct or not?

I have the shop manual, and have looked for a diagram showing this connection or lack of one, but am so far unable to find it.

My thanks in advance for any and all help.

That sounds all screwy.

The pipe at the rear of the fuel tank connects to the rollover valve. The carb vent pipes don't connect to anything, they just vent into the atmosphere. Someone put it back together wrong.

Thanks Slinky,

There must be a hose missing from the vent tubes, mine has 1 short (now connected from the carb vent to the tipover valve) and 1 long hose ( connected from the carb vent and running forward over the carbs to the back of the engine). I guess the short hose probably connects from the tank to the tipover valve and I'll have to make a new hose to attach to the other carb vent.

Now, should'nt the carb vent hoses empty on to the ground by the mono shock like the tipover hose does? If so, I need much longer hoses.

Yeah it does sound like you have a hose missing, from the tank to the tipover valve.

It would be easier to leave the existing hose on the carb and replace the misiing hose from tank to tipover valve.

Going from memory, the vent tubes on the Mikuni carbs go to the front of the carbs. With the Keihin carbs they are longer and tuck in behind the rear of the airbox. I have had both types of carbs on my bike and that's what I can recall.

All of this leads to the question, how was the bike running? Did this have any effect ?

The bike is running fine and does not seem to have any problems with the hoses as they are. I was going to change them today, but ran out of time. I will do it tomorrow and let you know if it makes any difference.

I have had the carbs off to change the airbox (cracked and broken) and the carb to engine rubbers (old ones also cracked and dry rotted). I made a diagram of the hose routing before removing anything, so I know that this is how it was when I bought it in March.

This past weekend I balanced the carbs and after paying close attention to the hose connections, I just did'nt like the routing. It did'nt seem to make any sense, so I posted here to find out what was what. Glad I did

Thanks again

Well, I changed the routing and connected the tipover valve to the tank and went for a 40 mile ride. There is a definite improvement in the overall performance. the bike feels smoother and more enthusiastic when you twist the throttle.

Thanks again for the help Slinky. :-D

No problem Nailerguy All those hoses can get confusing. First time I put my tank back on I managed to connect one of the carb vent hoses to the fuel tap. :whoops:
