As I was giving my bike a proper and thorough cleaning I discovered that I could easily change gears at the foot lever without engaging the clutch lever.

This happened as I was cleaning the gear selecting foot lever and it very easily slipped up into 2nd from neutral. Then playing around with it a bit I discovered it pretty easily went through any of the gears. I have not tried this with the engine running, nor do I plan to.

Is this normal or an indicator of some larger issue? I have not noticed anything funny with how the transmission has been acting or anything like that. The oil was recently changed and has less than 1000 miles.

Upon further investigation I did discover that the brake fluid in the hydraulic clutch system is cloudy. I plan on flushing that system out and refilling it today, but I fail to see how this could be linked.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

YES.

It indicates that your transmission is working normally.

Motorcycle transmissions are designed such that up-shifting without the clutch is relatively easy. I usually use the clutch for starting out and the 1-2 up-shift only. After that I just roll off the throttle and toe the lever up into the next gear. With a little practice the shifts are just as smooth as if you're using the clutch. Down-shifts are a little trickier, but can be done. I prefer to use the clutch for them.

Apparently clutchless downshifts are not a good idea - adds excessive wear to the selector forks or so I am told.

I dont think I've ever ridden a bike that couldnt do clutchless shifts. I generally dont use the clutch on upshifts, downshifts I clutch and blip the throttle.

Well this is good to know. Thanks everyone. I knew that it could be one of those duh! type things I never really understood. But you know what they say, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask.
