For 6 months I have been suffering oil weeping from the front right hand case cover of my '98 T'bird. A replacement gasket did not cure the problem.
My problem coincided with the fitting of a K&N crome filter to the crankcase breather. (looked nice and I was advised that it would give a smoother response at low revs) Not convinced that the filter was was my problem, I re-routed the breather back via the airbox just in case and hey presto, problem solved.
There is a salutory lesson here. :-/ I can only hope that there is no damage done.

I'm glad you posted this one as i was thinking about doing the K&N breather as well. I was getting fed up with oil seeping from the air box all over the engine. After thinking about it for about a year, i thought i would take a look at the oil slinger. As it turns out, you have to change the special oil seal on the shaft if you take the breather cover off....£20.00 for a bit of plastic in a aluminium case!!!! Didn't seem to be anything wrong with the slinger so i put it back together following the instructions to leave the seal for 15 minutes to set before turning the engine over.
Well, the oil gushing has stopped. Just a little trickle which you should expect as part of the routine maintenance. I guess the special seal wasn't put on properly or it had failed. Just as well that worked as it seems the K&N route doesn't work either.

Hi,

I am not a believer in the benefits of Cones, and therefore the fitting of a Crankcase Breather, in our variable UK climate. (E.G. Great performance one day, and then not so the next, etc....). So I have no experience of this.........

However, I just wonder if the positioning of 6sting's breather cone may be key? The breather is an outlet, and I guess if it was positioned in an airflow then you would get a back-pressure? Could this be the problem, I wonder?

Ciao,
Geoff

There is a weakness in the breather system - not only the oil seal but the slinger itself. later models had an improved slinger on a metal rather than plastic spindle. Had the oil seeping into airbox over engine problem myself and replacing the seal and slinger completely solved it, but the price of the parts is a complete rip off - about £60 including a new gasket!
