Looking at a 1995 t-bird with 10K on the clock. The engine seems a bit noisy at an idol compared to my older twin. I am told the water cooled triples have a bit of upper end noise. Otherwise the bike runs strong. No noise a running speed. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

If there's a diesel rattle at idle which lessens when revving the engine a little it's quite likely that one of the impellor bolts has sheared. It's VERY common on the older T-birds. The loose head of the bolt will be what cause the rattle. If the T-bird you're looking at is at a dealer you might want to ask them to take a look at the impellor bolts on both sides of the engine i.e. alternator side and clutch basket side.
I recently fixed mine and now the engine sounds like a dream at idle...no annoying rattle or clonk anymore....my bolt had sheard on the clutch basket side.

EDIT: Mine sheared at around 12,000 miles.

I remember mine sounding like a loud sewing machine before I gutted my pipes. Although I still hear it, it is slightly covered but a louder exhust note.

If the pipes are stock I would say it *could* be normal. Of course, without hearing it it's hard to say.

Just my $00.02

Jim....

Yes, it's a noisy but very solid engine. Ball bearings in a coffee can, gravel down a chute - take your pick.

Spooner's note about the impellor bolt is a valid one - but tricky for a newbie to identify. If you take a note of the VIN, you can call your local Triumph dealer and see if the service bulletin on the sheared bolt has been done or not.
