2001 Adventurer... lost another Coil yesterday... replaced my first one 5,000 miles ago... now running on two cylinders... road 100 miles with quite a few stalls & back fires. Great if you can keep it on the Highway. LOL.

Where is the best place/priced place to purchase another GIL coil. I'm only good with the basics when it comes to wrenching. Harding Park Cycle billed me 400+ a year ago for the Coil (TUNE UP) and replacement.

But a Coil, I can change.

1) Place to order & item number...?
2) Should I replace all 3?
2) Anything else I should replace along with the Coils to stop this head ache from happening?

4) Read that Nology coils with diodes are a good replacement; but I do not know anything about installing "diodes" or "How"; that is why I thought of just using the GIL. I read that if I do not install some type of 'diode' the tachos will not function properly....

Open to suggestions. NOTE: new plugs last 1M miles...

Thanks in advance
T. Ginn

Sorry to hear you're having this problem.... I see in your post in the classifieds that you ask about testing the coils. If you have access to an inductive timing light you should be able to identify the cylinder that isn't firing simply by connecting light to each plug wire and looking for the one that doesn't make the light flash (or it flashes irregularly). Short of that there are a couple more basic methods (e.g. one method is to pull one plug wire at a time and if the bike runs the same, you've probably found the culprit (If you pull a wire on a correctly firing cylinder you're going to be trying to run the bike on one cylinder - so you should know right away)). Once you've identified the bad coil/cylinder you should swap the suspected bad coil with another coil - if the problem moves with it you can be sure it is indeed a bad coil and not a bad plug wire or other ignition problem (maybe one of those new plugs is bad - or you simply have a loose connection or bad plug wire).

FWIW - I swapped my Gil coils for Nology's and have not had any problems with the Tach (have not needed to add the diode(s)).

Triumph used two suppliers for OEM coils. Gill (an English brand ) and a German brand ( I forget the name). They look about the same. The German ones seem to be 100% reliable.

I picked up a spare set on ebay as a backup but I have never had a problem with them. You can use coils from any 885cc triple, not just the classic triples.

Try Sprint Manfacturing in the UK for some used ones. A lot of guys in the US order stuff from them and they have a good rep.

Thanks in advance!

The German coils are PVL brand, don't know the part #.

The PVL part# was 1290007. I had one fail on my Sprint (sorry to spoil the myth!) and replaced it with Triumph's newer supplier GIL. The GIL part# is 1290046 and you can mix the two suppliers' parts.

A word of warning if buying secondhand, I think the coils fitted to the 4 cylinder machines (2 coils) may well be a different spec to our 3 cylinder coils.

Ciao,
Geoff

I checked my spares and the PVL coils are indeed # 1290007, as Geoff says.

I just did a quick google search and PVL coils throws up plenty of hits. They seem to be about US$80 each. They also seem to be used on BMWs.

I got mine from Manyunk Triumph in Philly (See links section) they will sell you a new one for $120(US) with no guarantee, or $60(US) for a used with a granter because they pulled it from a known good running bike.

Great bunch of guys there and very helpful.
