I see that the standard size rear tyre on a T-bird Sport is listed as a 160/70 section. While this size was probably common when the TBS came out it seems a little small by todays standards. Does anyone run a 170 section, and what is the effect on handling? I don't like putting larger tyres on if there is no advantage, and I know that sometimes a larger tyre can have adverse effects so I'm just wondering.....

When you add to the width you are increasing the foot print of the rubber on the road. If your not racing or looking for land speed records the added resistance will be minimal but this is just my opinion.

I recently went with beefier rear AND front tires. Steering hasn't change enough for me to really notice a difference due to the front change in width and hight the rear feels the same for me (On an Adventurer). My reasoning was simply to get fat white walls on my ride, I personally like the look.

You also will decrease the clearance in your wheel well. An example is that I can no longer use a front fender without it being modified because my front wheel is fatter. The rear typically has more clearance so I don't think that's going to be an issue for you although your going to want to take a hard close look at life with an extra inch around.

Keep in mind when you ride your tires expand a bit too.

Good luck!

Well I just ordered my replacements at stock sizes. If you check this link CLICK HERE you will see the biggest problem with wider tires is our stock rim width @ 4.25".
This chart shows you all the dimensions for the sizes (one is a 170 section)
Hope it helps!

I just installed the Avon in 160/70. It is alot heavier tire than i thought it would be, as it is a replacement for a BMW tourer (and Honda ST1100) of some sort. Legend's used a 160/60, presumably to lower them a bit and to gear them down (less power IIRC). My next one will be a 160/60. Will probably also adda tooth to the front sprocket when I change the chain.
