I have a 2000 Legend TT that I was going to replace the spark plugs in today. After removing the seat and gas tank, removing the plug wires as instructed in my owners manual, I couldn't get a socket to fit on the plug in the bike. The new plugs I bought correctly fit a deep well 5/8th socket. I assume that what is down in the hole is also 5/8th?
The plugs appear to tilt forward down in the hole and I cannot get the socket down on the plug. Does the valve cover have to be removed to get the plugs out or is there some special tool that is used. I did manage to get an 11/16th socket partially on the plug, but it slips when I try to put on enough pressure to remove the plug.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide!durkee@qconline.com<UL>[/list]null

I was fortunate to have my buddy change my plugs. He too had some trouble with his sockets. He was able to use the sparkplug socket from his KLR 650, but the plugs were in pretty tight and the centre plug pretty well screwed the socket.

So, off to NAPA/UAP for a proper slim socket - that worked fine.

Basically you need a thin walled socket. If you ever had any experience with a motorcycle that came with its own tool kit you might recall what the spark plug replacement tool looked like.

It is a super thin piece of stamped steal that had holes on top for you to put a Allen wrench through to turn it.

A standard Craftsman socket is way to thick as your experiencing. I am currently ordering one from Greatbaymotorcycles.com (Triumph) so I can change mine myself.

If you have the tool kit that came with your bike you can find the tool in there. If not, ask another biker if they have one from any old Honda. I think it's an 18mm socket.

If you get one I would appreciate it if you could confirm the size you had success with.

Yeah, what he said. I got a standard plug socket jammed in the hole before I realized what was going on. The toolkit plug socket fits like it was made to do that... I know that SnapOn sells thinwalled sockets, but I'm not positive if they're thin enough.

The standard tool kit has the correct wrench in it. In addition you will need a socket and a short extension. My wrench is an 18mm. The NAPA catalog doesn't list one. You will need a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the stock tool after installation (the rubber insert holds the tool onto the plug neck). The stock wrench is helpful as the front axle allen wrench extension/handle.

On a similar subject, verify your axle wrenches as I found old Yamaha and Kawasaki wrenches fit better than the stock ones (had longer handles).

OK .. so where do you get a "standard toolkit" for Triumphs? The Legends didn't come with a took kit, and I've been looking for one (unsuccessfully).

Anyone know where they can be found?

Thanks!

They were listed in the Triumph accessories catalogue. They had 2 sets, I think a 5 piece set and a 12 piece set. Either has the plug spanner and allen key included.

Hi,

You can also buy the Triumph Spark Plug Socket on its own, as individual part # 2300107-T0301.

Ciao,
