In the past I have seen reference to replacing the overly dim idiot lights with LEDs to make them more visible in daylight. It seems regular bulbs generate too much heat but LEds are ok.

Has anyone actually done this? If so how did it work? What wattage did you find worked best? Any other tips or warnings to consider?

Thanks for your input

Paul

I would like to get some information on this too.

My recent understanding has been that you don't want to go beyond the stock wattage because it will show up negatively somewhere else on the bike. The LED question I would love to hear answered. I remember years ago reading this was possible. I haven't searched on it yet though.

I do know that the 1.2 watt bulbs that are in the classics are available at auto stores as well.

I have two currently burnt out (high beam and left turn) but since I can't see them anyway in the day it doesn't really matter......sad huh?

Can someone please tell me what the warning lights are for on a 2002 Thunderbird, especially the top two? I don't have a manual and the top two have never lit.

Thanks,
Rick

dont fit aftermarket higher wattage bulbs as they can melt the housings. Just go for the brightest leds you can get (they dont have heat issues).

Sorry for being too vague in my initial inquiry.

When the ignition key is turned on before starting, the high beams, neutral, and oil warning lights turn on. I figure that one of the next two above these three, is "coolant temperature - too high".

I don't know what the other one is (not even shown in the wiring diagram in Haynes "Triples and Fours 91 to 99").

So two questions:
1. Should the two upper warning lights turn on to signify they are operational when you turn on the ignition?
2. What do these two lights signify?

Thanks,
Rick

The top warning light according to my 2003 TBS handbook is nothing, zilch, may be something on earlier models
the one below it is a high coolant temperature warning light, (never seen it lit on mine)
next down is oil pressure warning
next down is neutral
finally, high beam

The top idiot lamp location is for mounting the LED that came with the Triumph alarm system.

You can check the temp warning light by shorting the connector on the sensor thermistor to ground. That will cause the lamp to light. The sensor is located on the left of the cylinder head next to the water pipe.

Thank you very much Steve and Jim! That makes me feel a lot better. I thought maybe I had a couple of burned out warning lights.

This forum is a huge help.

Ordered my LED's today.
Colored appropriate 74s for the instruments and 4 6-WLED for the gauges.
