Took my 98 TBS in for the 6000 mile service.

As some of the folks here had said, Triumph has indeed extended the valve check interval to 12K on the triples, and so I passed on it as advised by the service manager. I had already changed the oil and the brake/clutch fluids, so I passed on that portion of the recommended service as well.

I did have both fork seals replaced and new oil put in since I had one side leaking, and had the radiator serviced. I had the rest of the recommended services done as well (carb sync, chain checks, etc.). I told them to go ahead and change the plugs on the bike while they were in there since it was cheap.

The bill was something like $460, which is pretty consistent with what I've been hearing from other folks. A stiff price, but at least it was completed quickly.

So, she's back home and ready to go. I can't wait! It's been a really long time since I've ridden it due to a couple of the service items needing to be done. I'm pretty excited.

My bike has 5500 miles on it. I ride it every day to work, but work is only 4 miles down the road! Anyhow I am planning a tour of NE this summer, and called the dealer to bring the bike in for some brakes everything else hums like a kitten. So i wake up to a nice rainy NE spring.. Ride the bike to work with everyone in cages looking at me like I am either crazy or a superhero.. After work I get back on the bike to bring it to the dealer, and as soon as I start it up I smell something burning. No biggie I figure some electrics got wet and something needs to dry off. So off I go and my perfect bird is running like S*&T! Felt like i was either on one cylinder, or the carbs were clogged. I would have to rev it to around 4000rpm to feel anything shy of normal acceleration. Stopped at a few lights, in the rain, and the engine stalled. Anyway I made it to the dealer, and now all i can think of is that somehow a little rain has turned what should be a simple brake job into a major service.. Hopefully she just needs the service you just got, but I have never had a bike that went downhill so fast simply because it got wet.. Has anyone ever had this problem before?

Nope, never had any problems caused by rain and my bike has been in some serious rain, it may just be a coincidence.

Just spoke with my dealer - He said he has not taken a look at the bike yet but claims that Triumph has NOT extended the valve check interval to 12k. He said that the interval is 6k on the carburated models and 12k on the fuel injected models.. Anybody hear this before? He did go on to say that to check the valves would be around $300, but if the bike is running fine than I could pass..

Your dealer is incorrect - look here: from the horse's mouth - the official maintenance schedule from Triumph

Now having said that, some dealers are still recommending the 6k valve check then going to 12k after that. From my experience (as an engine remanufacturer in a former life, but also from doing my valves at 6k) I would tend to go with the 6k, 18k, 30k rather than the current 12k 24k 36k recommendation from Triumph.
