Driving home from work today and my speedo stopped. Pulled the cable from the hub and its in one piece. Appears that the gear in the hub isn't spinning. Not sure where to start, is that a replaceable part, or can it be rebuilt. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks Fbird

Your local Triumph dealership/shop should be able to order that part. I have not had that problem but a friend of mine had it happen to his Speed Triple. I wish I could help you more. Good luck!

With any luck it will just be the speedo drive ring, which sits in the hub. It's cheap and easy to replace.

Worst case, it will mean a new speedo drive and they are pricey.

Thanks for the responses, sounds like I'll be taking it apart and try to figure it out from there.

The speedo is about $900 from the dealer, so definately check the speedo drive first!

It's possible that it was reassembled incorrectly on a tire change and you've got a stripped drive plate (the cheap part!) but could be a broken or stripped worm gear.

If it's the worm gear, you're probably going to need a new speedo drive. Check with www.baxtercycle if that's the case since they might have a used replacement.

The big question is?

Was the odometer working.

If the Odometer was still working and the speedo had stopped then the head unit is probably dead. But if both stopped then its either the cable or the drive unit.

I tried a local speedo shop for repair. They opened my unit up and said the magnets had died and there was no way to replace them. But if it is the speedo repair could be possible.

The cable and drive unit are cheap, the headunit will run you $270.33 but check a few dealers as I found one in my area that charges over retail for all parts and accessories. And ask the dealer how the order the closest one to me only orders once a week if he has a big enough order to justify ordering. So I ended up getting mine through Ma's in Fargo.

To answer your question Gary, no the odometer isn't working. I'm pretty sure its something in the drive unit, just have to wait for the weekend to pull the wheel so I can figure it out.

fbird,

Then you should be good to go just fix or replace the drive unit, and check the cable while you are at it. Definatly the cheap part to replace.
