Thunderbird Sport Air Filter Change Modification.

I followed the article on how to replace the air filter and decided to make a modification. Before I replaced the air-box I cut the U-shaped air box (rear section) in half. I reasoned that if you could remove the air box in two parts you would not have to remove the carbs and the front section of the air-box. The U-shaped air-box has a mold release line down the center that I used as a guide to cut the box in half, this also cuts the bottom bolt hole in half. Clean up the cut marks with a file or sand paper than cover one side of the cut with silicon seal so that the gap will be-closed when the air-box is bolted up. The bolthole, which was cut in, half will need some help. I used a piece of metal 1 inch long and bent up both ends leaving about a ½ inch center section. Drill a hole in the center of the metal for the torx bolt, use some lock tight and set this bolt in the bottom of the air-box. Then tighten this bolt just enough so when you install the air-box half’s the bolthole will slide behind the metal bracket. Install the rest of the torx bolts and finish up with what’s left. Next time you change the air filter remove 9 torx bolts and pull the U-shaped air-box in half.

Neat idea! I did something similar when I replaced the condensor on for an A/C on a 90's Mustang. All I had to do was remove the glove box and could get to it from there..

Yes, that sounds a decent idea.

I don't suppose you took any pics?

Thanks a lot.

This modification sounds quite promising.

( Now if we can find some way around that bisected hole issue! )

That's a great idea! It should work on T-birds, Legends, Adventurers, Sprint 900's, Tridents, Trophys and all the other older T-3's. I'm going to do it the next time I'm in there.
