Hi,

Your rear wheel is the same as the Thunderbird Sport. SBF in Germany offer a 5.5" x 17" rimmed wheel and have fitted it to the Sport. See these links:

Ciao,

I'm not sure how much wider the Speed Triple wheels are but I have seen them on Thunderbirds and they look pretty nice. Of course the Speed Triples are not spoked wheels so you would have to decide if you like the mags instead of the spokes. It also might be a little cheaper than sending your wheel out to be modified or than buying something custom.

The T300 Speed Triple has a 5.5" x 17" rear wheel, and so SBF are matching this size in their spoked offering. You can see Legends & Thunderbirds fitted with the Brembo Alloy 3-spoke (Speed Triple, etc...) wheels on the Triumph-ant site ( Customer Bikes ).

MrCheese,
If I was going to do this, I think I would have a word with CWC ( Central Wheel Components ), who also provide the spoked wheels to Triumph. They can provide information on matching the rim and the spokes. I know of a couple of US guys who have ordered rims & spokes from them for shipping & rebuilding locally (XS850s), and this may be an option for you in Oz?

I see you have a "xs850 yammy", and this link may be of interest, and show you some of CWCs work? Bespoke Wheels

Hope this helps?

Ciao,
Geoff

I have a 180/55ZR17 rear tire with my ZRX rear wheel - I believe that it might take a 190 but I wasn't comfortable with taking it that high - the current clearance to the chain/swing arm is close - a 190 may rub

HTH in so far as how fat you can go.

Here's a pic showing the difference from the rear:

stock on left and middle, 180 on right

Nice bike Mick! I have '00 Tbird the same color as yours and I have been taking hints on what you have done to your bike and doing some of the same things to mine. The 180 rear tire looks great and I am going to be doing the same. I got rid of the peashooters and went with Staintune reverse meg exhaust (one on each side) K&N filters were also added after removing the stock airbox. I also have brackets to hold the chrome side covers so it does not have that big opening.Definitely got more growl and HP now! I will be posting pics later.

Just curious, is it for looks or performance?

I have gone the rout of the s300 three spoke alloy wheels from a Trophy. They came with a 180 tyre on the back but when i mentioned what i was doing to the chap at Sprint Manufacturing, he reckoned that, through the experience of others, that the 170 tyre was better for handling. So i put the Avon tyre i had on. Haven't tried it out yet, weather!!
