I've got a 99 Adventurer has under 7000 miles - still have the original tires, Have good tread and no cracks - always keep on carpet pads when parked in garage. Just curious if I should start thinking about changes tires?

Of course, this is just IMHO..... but if the tyres aren't worn or cracked and the bike feels right, then why change them?

I don't know where you live but the only long term concern I have is; if it's generally hot and dry then the volatile compounds in the rubber might evaporate faster than normal.

Would that lead to a loss of flexibility and "stiction?" Maybe a tyre-engineer out there would know?

A lot of guys with more money than I have will change tires every 6-7 years regardless of wear, claiming that the rubber is shot. Not me. Unless the tread is under 2/32", measured with a tread-depth guage you can get at Auto Zone for under $5, I don't change the tire out -- unless it is starting to show weather cracks in the sidewall. Then the tire is gone, regardless of the age. On the other hand, putting at least 3K a year on some and up to 15K on others, over the years very few of my bikes could go more than 5 years without wearing out all the tread.

Generally I find front tires get more tread life. I have over 9K on my Tbird and the rear looks like it will be gone within another 3K, the front looks good to go for many more than that.

You'll get a lot of differing opinions on this one, much like on batteries. I have bikes with batteries over 5 years old doing just fine, many of my friends change out every three years. I just tell them to give me their old batteries.

If you run a bunch of bikes like I do, unless you are pretty rich, you can't be changing everything that is still working OK every ten minutes.

Again, just an opinion -- after some 400K miles.

Just a *personal* opinion, but it seems to me that the stickier the tire was when new, the faster the tread seems to harden up from age.

That may or may not be a problem depending upon how agressive a rider you are.

If your sidewalls are starting to crack it's definately time to replace the tires regardless of the amount of tread left.
