A lot of guys with more money than I have will change tires every 6-7 years regardless of wear, claiming that the rubber is shot. Not me. Unless the tread is under 2/32", measured with a tread-depth guage you can get at Auto Zone for under $5, I don't change the tire out -- unless it is starting to show weather cracks in the sidewall. Then the tire is gone, regardless of the age. On the other hand, putting at least 3K a year on some and up to 15K on others, over the years very few of my bikes could go more than 5 years without wearing out all the tread.
Generally I find front tires get more tread life. I have over 9K on my Tbird and the rear looks like it will be gone within another 3K, the front looks good to go for many more than that.
You'll get a lot of differing opinions on this one, much like on batteries. I have bikes with batteries over 5 years old doing just fine, many of my friends change out every three years. I just tell them to give me their old batteries.
If you run a bunch of bikes like I do, unless you are pretty rich, you can't be changing everything that is still working OK every ten minutes.
Again, just an opinion -- after some 400K miles.
