Just unwrapped my Adventurer after a long winter rest. Seen that there was gas/water leaking from the airbox pull the plug on drain tube and took it for a quick spin. Parked the bike and next thing I know quite of water/gas started coiming out to where there is a big puddle under the bike.

Before I put it up for the winter I ran it till the carb ran dry.

Anybody know what the probelm is. I'm guessing a float is stuck. I'd hate to have to pull the carbs - what a pain.

Any insights would be appreciated.

thanks

I'm confused about the water, was the bike outside?

I thought it was condensation (wishful thinking) from sitting but it looks like all gas - I shut off the gas and it stops. What do you think Float? or could it be something else. Hoping there is a quick tip that saves me from having to pull the carbs.

Thanks

My TBS did that once after a long sit. I don't know why. It hasn't happened since, but it wasn't many miles ago. (It was last year. I have had the bike in storage), so I'm interested in what caused it too. I just brought the bike out of storage and am getting it ready to ride again. Waiting on my new throttle cable....

Almost certainly a stuck float from what you have described. Chances are a fair bit of gas may have made it into your oil too, so you may want to consider changing that when you have this sorted.

Other possible causes would be a cracked or holed float, bad float valve or debris stuck in the valve.

Must have been a float. Tapped each bowl with plastic end of screwdriver and fired it up again - no more leakage. I'll check the oil - thanks for the heads up.

You're lucky the filter box leaks because if it didn't you could have wrecked your engine on startup.

If gas had gotten into the cylinder(s) you could have had a "hydraulic lock" because gasoline doesn't compress like air does.

That bends connecting rods which causes them to break somewhere down the road.

Next time you find a gas puddle under the bike, pull the spark plugs before you crank it and save your engine.

Thanks for all the tips. I did change the oil - could smell gas in it. But no longer leaking gas, put new new oil in it - took it for spin running good as new. This was the first and last year I run the carbs dry when putting up for the winter.

Next year as winter approaches start putting fuel stabiliser in the tank so that when you store it the carbs have "stabilised" fuel in them. Also sync your carbs and change the plugs if needed. you'll have no problems come springtime

Hi guys,
my adventurer did the same thing. I have a strong belief this is from ODing on Stabil. I OD'ed the tractor too and same thing.. gum on the needle holds float up and gas runs out. I drained gas (with Stabil) and rapped the top of carbs like you did, cleaned the SNOT out of the airbox drain hose and reinserted pulg. Next 2 years I used slightly less than recommended Stabil and no problems since.

good luck,

mike
