I do not have a manual so I have no clue. I looked all over and cant find it. Also what type of Coolant does the bike take.

Mike,

You'll find a few threads on here about oil. The classics use a sight glass rather than a dipstick. The sight glass is on the lower RHS (as you sit on the bike) of the engine. Oil level should be checked with the bike upright - the level should be halfway up the glass.

Coolant is a 50/50 mix - ethlyene glycol IIRC. Any 'quality' motorcycle antifreeze should do the job.

In case you don't have a center stand someone will have to help you check the oil level (obviously he says!!)

Anyway, I am telling you this in case you want to put a centre stand on your bike, the one to use is the Thunderbird stand, part number A9950063.

It is pricey, but is a necessity IMHO.

Enjoy your bike.

The Thunderbird stand will work on a 2000 Adventurer?

Mike,

You can check the oil yourself without a centrestand. I just grab the RHS bar with my right hand, kneel down on right knee and just haul the bike upright - even easier if you put a small block of wood under the sidestand.

If you then keep your left knee against the RHS side panel, this provides a 'support' in case the bike goes past the balance point. It sounds awkward, but gets easy with practice. It works for me....

If you check the oil level with the bike on the centrestand, you need to put weight on the rear footpeg to bring the rear wheel into contact with the ground - this makes the bike the same 'level' as it would be if held upright.

Having said all that, I'd still get hold a centrestand if you can, as it makes routine maintenance much simpler.

I have a little dentist mirror with a telescopic handle which does the trick- you can use it while sitting normally on the bike.

Slinky,

Now that does sound like an easier method and one which I'll shortly be adopting methinks!

Hey, Slink,

That is a very inovative idea, that dental mirror. May even work about as well as the wife, which is the tool I use to check the oil.

The larger issue remains: what idiot puts a dime sized viewing port down under the bike where even on a good day it is hard to see, and almost impossible when there is any reflection on the sight glass? Whatever happened to "dip sticks," or do they all work for the Triumph design team? To be fair, if you have to have a sight glass, why not make it an inch or more in diameter, with a line or two on it, like most of the Japanese bikes do?

What I don't understand about Triumph is how they can do the really big things so very well and then leave us with a lot of little niggling agravations (sp?) to hound us every day: like the sight glass, removing a seat on a Tbird; having to take the bike apart to check the plugs; having to use shims instead of wrench adjustable tappets on the valves. The list goes on and on.

Meanwhile, back at the original question. You DO have to "level" the bike, as noted above, if you check it on the center stand, or you will get a false overfull reading. And, on the 885 Triples if you fill above the sight glass, and you WILL if you put the amount of oil in the manual recommends you will very likely end with oil seaping out of the left side and making a little "traditional" Trumpet puddle on the garage floor, to help remind us all of the good old days with our 60s and 70s Bonnevilles.

Take care,

Monte

I can't be sure about the stand fitting anything other than '96 to '98 models. I made this mistake before and should have remembered.

We need someone else to answer this.

Ride safe

Having said that, I still haven't managed to put my T-Bird on its center stand on my own. :whoops: It is starting to really put a dent into my biker confidence. I'm 6"2 mind you, but apparently without any brain and/or brawn...
