I just replaced my rear tire, and though while at it, might as well replace the chain and sprockets.

Before I started the projects, the bike was not leaking any oil. Now it is.

I replaced the shift shaft seal, if its leaking there, I don't think much. I am getting oil all over and suspect the gasket under the front sprocket cover is the problem. I replaced it when I replaced the front sprocket. The old gasket came off with no problems.

Has anyone else had a problem with this gasket leaking.?

Should I put a gasket sealer on the surfaces first? Would using two gagskets be better than one?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I plan to get a new gasket and shift saft seal but would like to hear from others before taking it all apart again and doing another oil change.

Are you sure your leak is coming from the sprocket cover ? On the very bottom of the clutch release cylinder there is a little slot about 1/4 " long. If your clutch pushrod seal is leaking under the sprocket cover, this slot is where the oil will come out.

When I changed my sprocket and put everything back together, it leaked when I started it. At first I thought it was coming from the sprocket cover but when I started the engine and got down on the ground to look where it was coming from, I could see that it was actually coming from this slot. From now on I'll replace this seal alnog with the shifter shaft seal whenever I replace sprockets.

Thanks, that was some great advice. I never noticed the slot before. I pretty much have oil all over down there so its hard to see where it is coming from.

I wiped the slot area off with a clean rag and then operated the cluth in and out for about 30 seconds. I then looked at the slot again and no oil appears to have come out at all.

The bike was not running, so maybe that makes a difference.

If the weather is nice enough to ride, I'll bring it home warmed up and repeat my experiment.

Tomorrow or Wednesday I plan to purchase a torque wrench.wrench. I'm using a small socket wrench to tighten all the bolts. Maybe I'm not getting them tight enough. I have been concerned about stripping the threads.

One other thought if you don't mind.

The shop manual and Haynes have you install a new seal and then put tape over the shift shaft threads.

I wonder if it would be best to install the cover without the seal in at all, then slide the seal over the shaft and seat it with a deep well socket?? What do you think?

By the way, I went to an 18 tooth front, happy with the change!

Hey Tom. When mine was leaking, it didn't leak while the engine was off. It didn't matter if i squeezed the clutch lever, it only leaked out of this slot while the engine was running. I believe it would help to use a torque wrench. At least then you know that you're getting them tightened to the correct torque and they're all even. I tried putting tape over my shifter shaft when I installed the cover but it just got bunched up and made things difficult. So I took the tape off and just tried to be very careful.

Does your bike leak only when its running ?

I think there is some slight leaking when the bike is not running. It hasn't been run in about 24 hours. I wiped up the floor about 12 hrs ago. I didn't see any more oil on the garage floor but I spoteed a drop ready to drop off the bottom of the case under the shift shaft.

I bought a torque wrench today and went over the screws. There is one I could not get at because the foot pegs were in the way. Some of them got tightened a little. Most were just about spot on.

Before I call it a day, I'll see if I can get at the one screw.

Unless I get lucky and screws just needed to be a tad tighter, I will have it apart again this weekend.

Oil leaks fixed!!

The clutch shaft seal was a bit dinged up, probably from my not being careful enough the first time I put the bike back together.

The shift shaft seal also was leaking.

Tonight I put the sprocket cover in place and snuged up the screws. Then put some electrical tape on the shift shaft spline. Then I just slipped the new seal over the shaft and seated it with a deep well socket just a little smaller than the seal. I then used a torque wrench to tighten all the screws.

This seems a lot easier than trying to put the cover back on with the seal already installed.

The gasket was compromised by a small piece of what looked like rubber cement on the sealing surface. I somehow missed that the first time I put it together.

A mechanic at a local Triumph dealership suggested that the gasket go on dry, so I was also careful to keep everything real clean.

Thanks for your advice on the clutch shaft.
