My 2001 Legend emits a "ticking" sound. As I am new to Triumph, I need to ask if this is something to fret over. Is it normal?

The "tick" is most noticeable at idle.

well look at this way mine ticks too, i was told if it doesnot tick then start worrying because it,s not running just a normal character in this older style motor very loose tolerances than jap engines which are more refined

The dealer told me this was because of "straight cut" primary gears. I dunno if he was spinning me a yarn or not. It's done 20,000 hard kilometres, the noise is still the same as when new. It seems a little quieter when cold with new oil in it, after a couple hundred ks it goes back to its standard noise.

Do not get confused with a rattle from the alternator area, cause if it rattles at low revs but disappears as the revs rise then it could be the dreaded alternator bolt sheared off.

bollocks, shedds - nothing to do with tolerances! Simply the type of design.

The Triumph factory has state of the art equipment, and has had from the beginning. No Jap bike can hold a candle to it in that department...

Its good to know that the ticking may be considered normal.

Can someone provide a method to check for this alternator bolt problem?

Straight cut gears make a whining sound (like a car in reverse) not a ticking sound. Stright cut primary gears would defiantely be adding to the overall noise you get from a T3, but would most likely be that whistly/whine noise you get as you rev it.

Avatar,

To check that bolt you must pull the alternator and have a look see. It's not a difficult operation, check your manual for instructions. Also, if you look around here you'll find several posts specifically about the alternator bolt problem that really go into detail.

I'd like to add that the alternator bolt problem is quite common.
