Rev needle stuck/dead

Yupp..that's where it's at. Anyone had this happen to their bike?

TBSstunta suggests I give it a good wack with a hammer...which is probably good solid advice but I thought I'd just throw it out here as well. A few options as to what the solution might be seemed like a good idea.
