I'm new to the list, but have been visiting for some time now. I have a 2001 Legend and am getting intermitant spark on the #3 cylinder. I have swapped coils and wires and also read the wiring back to the igniter. It is always #3 no matter what configuration I try. What is my best bet for a new Igniter and do you have any idea of cost. Thanks :???:

Thanks for the post, but I am monitoring the spark with a spare plug grounded out to the engine casing, and have swapped wires and coils. My #3 coil and wire fire the #2 cylinder, thats why I suspect the Igniter. Would a Lilly chip take the place of the igniter or is it in line?

I have a 2001 T-Bird, and was having the same problems but with the # 2 coil location.
My triumph dealer chased the problem down to the igniter.
Lucky for me it was covered under the emissions warranty.
Otherwise a new igniter was $664.00

Before going to all that expense and headache.... make sure that carb is clean! A bit of crud in the main is all it takes to produce a similar problem... been there, dunnit.

Check the wiring between the igniter and coil. You could have a bad connector or connector pin (burnt, loose, bent, etc.) so that's worth a careful examination. A bad crimp on a connector pin is another possibility. If the wiring is healthy then It's probably like the igniter since you've swapped coils and the problem didn't move.

It's pretty unusual that an igniter like this fails with an intermittant, so do check the wiring and connectors carefully.

Try www.baxtercycle.com for a used replacement at 1/2 or 2/3 list price. (I don't remember their used parts pricing policy.)

FYI: The later Classic triples use a sealed (non-repairable) Gill transistor ignition. It is not a CDI (Capacitive Discharge Ignition), not reprogrammable, does not have a replaceable "chip" and isn't an ECU (Engine Control Unit) since they're only found on fuel injected vehicles.
