I have heard about 'removing inlet rubbers' when fitting triumph off road pipes. and also, 'tinkering with the airbox'. Does anyone know what is meant by this? What are inlet rubbers? Where are they? I have the these pipes fitted and I simply slipped them on. I do get a lot of popping on decelaratioin though, but as long as this does no damage I am ok with it. Any info??

Cheers

Ade

I think that this only applies to early Tbirds with Mikuni carbs. They had restrictive intake rubbers that could be replace to let the engine breathe more freely. I think the switched to Keihens after 1996 which don't have the restrictive rubbers.

The inlet rubbers are located on the front of the carburator, when you are sitting on the bike, they connect the carbs to the engine. from what I know the Thunderbird has restriction on these rubbers compare to the TBS. Fitting the TBS rubber will get rid of that restriction.

For your popping, normally the carbs are too lean. It is only a matter of opening the mixture screw, located under the carbs, sometimes capped. With off road pipes, you can put them about 21/2 turn out from close and you will get rid of a lot of popping. Mind you a little is nice.

Thunderbirds with Kei Hin carbs (2000>) do not have restricted inlet rubbers.

You can identify the restricted inlet rubbers by dimples about the diameter of a cigarette located in the sides of the rubbers. The dimples are apparently to prevent "tampering" so that you can't carve the restrictions out with an x-acto knife.

The non-restrictor rubbers have no dimples.

I obviously have the non-restricted type then. One more mod less to do!
