I have an old Garmin III+ GPS on my T-Bird and seriously thinking about upgrading to a V Deluxe. The V Deluxe has much more functionality and not too expensive. But before I do I wanted to check out some of the higher end Garmins and other brands and also ask you folks for advice.

I also wanted to share a link to this new (to me) GPS called TomTom Rider. Looks great but very expensive. I am not certain, but I think TomTom is from UK and only recently being market in US. Check out the link. http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtom-rider.php
The bike it is modeled on in the photo is a green and champagne T-bird, just like mine. That is a sign, don't you think???

Used to use a Garmin Emap under the clear plastic of my tank bag. Now use a Garmin GPSmap 60c. Using a RAM mount to replace one half of the clutch clamp - keep the old part.

This rig works wonderfully well. Can see the screen easily and the autorouting is a real improvement over the Emap.

On a recent trip, took a number of paved roads above and below a ho-hum non-divided highway. No traffic, great scenery - I would never have explored these roads without the GPS.

I've been considering GPS for my Bird. I contacted Garmin Tech support. They had some good info. That would be my suggestion. Drop them a line. They steered me away from some models I might have considered.

I have just been given an Ipaq 6500 (?) at work.. It comes with TomTom ( I think TomTom are a Dutch outfit).

The Ipaq works pretty well. You could leave it in a pocket and listen to the spoken directions thru an earpiece. The Ipaq is also a mobile phone and digital camera, so it has a lot of functionality, but the battery life is very poor. On a long bike trip you would want to use an in-car charger via an accessory socket.

I have two hand-me-down Garmin's - I was thinking of trying to mount one at some point.

Question: are you guys installing a new fuse block for the accessory socket? Or is it a seperate inline fuse, or are you tapping an existing circuit?

I'm using an in-line fuse to an accessory socket. I have a battery tender connection to the right side of the bike. When riding, I connect a cross-bike wire that is under the seat to get power to the left side of the bike. Made the cross-bike wire with two-wire trailer parts available at any auto supply store. Then, the accessory socket-on-a-wire, with another two-wire connector gets power to the tank bag. Finally, a standard Garmin cable goes to the GPS. That way the Garmin adapter can also be used in the car.
