First off, I thank everyone for sharing their wealth of knowledge about our bikes.

Here is my question. If someone hands you a set of cams telling you that they are green cams how can you be sure he is telling the truth?
Is there an identifying part number? These are marked 1140345. They have green paint on the ends opposite the gears. One has the number 9 stamped before the 5th lobe from the end. The other has a 5 in the same location. Thank you in advance for any help.:dunno

The only part numbers I have seen are the casting numbers (1140345), so those won't help any, since all use the same casting.

The Paint is the only identifying mark I know about.

Can you post a pic of the 2 numbers you speak of? ( 5 and 9)
I've never noticed those before.

Only 3 colors of T3 cams Blue, Green, Red.

They're green cams because they came from a 1997 Daytona....I'm sure that's my ebay auction you're describing. Also, you can not go by the green paint alone because I've used cams from a 2000 speed triple which are the same part number as the 1997 Daytona cams but have a red(ish) paint on them....more like a terracotta.

I also have a set of green cams from a 2000 Sprint ST which like the 2000 Speed Triple, they have the terracotta paint on them as well. If you check bikebandit.com you will see that all three motorcycles have the same part number.

If you're buying cams from someone you don't trust then the only way to really know what you're getting it to measure the lift. Blue cams are 7. something, green/terracotta are 8.9 and reds are 9. something.

Item number: 270889846793

Maybe I should have included a photo with a measuring device that would reflect the lift. I'll do that when if I decided to sell the Sprint ST cams.

Yep, The early T5 Cams will work in T3 engines. The terra Cotta paint.

But that paint color was also used on the later T5 cams which will not work in T3 engines. In that case you also need to count the teeth on the cam drive gears. They changed that when the T5 engine received it's first revision, I think that happened with the 2001 model year, but cannot be sure about that.

And ..... I forgot how many teeth are on the correct cam gears.

38 teeth on the gear. 2001 and below cams will work....the change happened in 2002 ;)

You are correct. I am currently bidding on your cams. It is a lucky break that you saw my post. I should have posted questions before bidding instead of after. I got away with it this time! If I win I may have a few more questions. Rob

Actually, I should have included the cam profile chart and a picture that would indicate that the lobes exhibit the proper lift for "Green" cams.

None the less, you are now armed with knowledge and even if you don't win this particular auction you know what to look for in the future and will be able to make an informed decision.

Good luck!
