C'mon guys, lighten up a bit...

Repetittive trolling is against the TriumphRat.Net Acceptable Use Policy. If somebody repeatedly trys to incite others / call people names / hijack threads for their own (off topic) ends, they may well find themselves shut out.

Now having said that I don't want to ban anybody, it is never done lightly and it is almost always done with concensus of all forum moderators. However, I value the tone / content / direction of this site much more than the contributions of any one individual.

Jeez... this is too heavy!

I'm not going to lock this thread (even though it essentially has nothing to do with the subject line), unless other's convince me otherwise.

edit: this was the first warning Many off-topic posts have been removed from the thread

Do I need to call someones Mum to put them in time out? When my 6 and 4 year old bicker to the point that you too have it becomes irellevent who started it. I think the Moderator made his point. It is ashame it has fallen on deaf ears.

For the purpose of this thread I bought my 99 T'bird used with 5,000 miles in January for $5,500.00 I put another $1,000 in accessories on her. (Shield, Bags, Seat, Tires.) Today, Kelly Bluebook places the value at $4,820.00 while NADA gives me a dismal value of $3,435. To make it worse, they both refuse to accept that I do not have a "Sport" edition from 99. I am sure a "sport" is fetching more than a regular T'Bird.

Of course if she were for sale I might be p-o'd about that. I drive her to work every day and arive with a grin instead of a public transit frown. To boot, I get a fresh compliment at least weekly. I get to ride a bike with a heafty amount of "cool" associated with it while not paying through the nose. I'd say if you add it all up I am doing ok in the "value" department.

I hadn't really thought about Triumphs appreciating in value but I've gotten a bit curious about it so (when I get some free time) I'll go through my old copies of Motorcycle Consumer News and see what I can find. They run a used bike value listing a couple of times a year, so that should be a good set of references.

I'd expect the value to drop pretty quickly from new and then depreciate more slowly until it reaches a level value. At that point I'd expect to see the value creep up slowly with inflation. It'll be interesting to see if that's the pattern.

Speaking of depreciation... I was at the dealer's yesterday and the Triumph mech was taking a 955 Sprint apart. He was pulling the cams out and something looked pretty strange. Then I realized that most of the tappets were stuck in the down position!

It seems that the bikes owner came screaming up the interstate, downshifted one too many times on an exit ramp, and WAY over-revved the engine. The valves floated, hit the pistons and bent.

I figure the dude's looking at about a $3000 repair bill. That's some serious depreciation....

When I bought my T'bird new in Oct '99 it cost Aus$14,990 + ORC. Six months later a new T'bird was reduced in price to Aus13,990. Rolling it out of the showroom probably dropped another Aus$ 2k or 3K. So after 6 months ownership value had dropped say Aus$4k to $11,000. After 5 years ownership & 46,000kms (28,500 miles) *if* I wanted to sell it now I'd probably get around Aus $8k - 9k.
But I bought it as a keeper, & keeping it I am. Now if Triumph had managed to produce a Bonnie that with a better power to weight ratio, & kept the weight much closer to a *real* Bonnie then I could have been tempted, but they didn't & I'm not. Honestly there's been nothing on the market since I bought my T'bird that comes anywhere close. It's not perfect, but it does everything well, makes me grin every time, & has style. If it hadn't turned out so, the only alternative I could conceive of would be picked from an assortment of old Brit-Iron.

regards
Cuppa

ps. i don't reckon $000's spent on 'accessories' are likely to add to value, but maybe help by making the bike more easily saleable.
pps. I suppose the day will eventually come when I'm unable to ride anymore. Hopefully a long way off yet. But I'll keep my fingers crossed that when that day comes, if I can bear to part with my baby, & not have it buried with me, then hopefully it will be worth sqillions :-D

Once again....

enough already

There is more than one antagonist keeping the ***** in this thread going. I am receiving complaints left right and center about this stuff.

I am deleting all but the on-topic posts. I will not hesitate to boot people out of the forum for a cool off period if the sniping continues.

second warningTurn the other cheek! The best way to handle anyone you feel is trolling is to totally ignore them. Those who are trolling thrive on raising ire / provoking a response.

How do we determine the value of our bike in the UK, on-line that is? I know in the USA there is Kellys and NADA.

Thanks

I dont know (or care) about the value of my TBS, but I do appreciate it more every time I ride it.
Especially after I have been riding the URAL.

I took a look at the July 2005 issue of MCN and found the following year/value list for the 900 Speed Triple. I'm using this rather than the TBS values for a first look since the bike has been in continuous production and the TBS wasn't produced for 6 years of the period. It seemed to me that it might be representative of Triumph depreciation and/or provide a reference line for other data. I'm still thinking about that...

The year is the model year of the bike and the values given are for July 2005. I don't have a list price for the 2005 model so that's blank.

Year.... Value.... % Chg
2005.... 8800.... ..........
2004.... 6705.... -23.8
2003.... 5910.... -11.9
2002.... 5470...... -7.5
2001.... 5045...... -7.8
2000.... 4645...... -7.9
1999.... 4075.... -12.3
1998.... 3670...... -9.9
1997.... 3505...... -4.5
1996.... 3210...... -8.4
1995.... 3470..... +8.1

I've still got to dig up some older MCN's and take a look at that data since these values may be skewed by a variety of artifacts.

I'm curious as to how inflation and the Clinton recession have affected the values over the past few years but don't know if there's sufficient data for accurate corrections.

Parkers price guide...

Or you could try the Glass's site. Glass's is the price guide that the trade use, but online they want to charge you just for looking..
