I'm getting ready to change my plugs tomorrow (finally!) and check a few things out. I took my bike out yesterday for a spin, and it's still bogging some, sputtering a little, cut out on me twice as I was taking off of a stop, and then I got a little jolt of power out of nowhere. I still have all of the advice you all gave me before about carbs, air filter, etc., and I will be dealing with those things as well, but I was wondering if it might also be the fuel filter, and if it's easy enough for a newbie to do.

And another friend suggested the possibility of the floats. Thoughts?

BTW - If I haven't said it before, you guys are the best! Thanks so much for being here, and having a great forum

Sue

Sue the fuel filters are located inside the fuel tank, attached to the fuel tap/petcock whatever you want to call it. Not a Biggie to clean them, just drain the tank, undo the two bolts that hold the tap in the tank and remove. I also dismantled the tap as well and gave everything a good blow out with compressed air. Be carefull with the tank and naked flames etc. Keep away from pilot lights.
Assemble the tap with a little vaseline on the "O" ring, and it will work a lot nicer.
I do this every twelve months or so as a lot of ***** comes in fuel in Australia.
There is also a little duckbill filter inside the fuel line down by your carbies, its located where the line from the tank "tees" into the carbies. If your gunna remove the tank and all to do your plugs, might as well clean that one as well.
Hope this helps.................cheers Jim

90% of my problem was the fuel filter. Clogged with rust-colored particles. I washed it and the pet-cock out, and it (almost) runs like a dream. I also increased the idle a little with the knobby dial, and that also seemed to help, but it mildly sputtered on me a couple of times, and cut off once when I was at a standstill at a stop sign. Started right up, though, and I took off just fine.

It's also got a slightly less than rhythmic exhaust (puff-puff-puffpuff) as I hold my hand behind the pipe. That's another day.

On a side note, the plug I was able to get out looked fine, but MAN what a pain! It's way down deep in the head, and surrounded by other stuff. I don't think I'll be tackling the center plug or carbs unassisted. I need a good teacher before I'm going to do much more.

Thanks to everyone for all your help with everything. It might not be perfect, but I'm back on the road again!

Sue

Glad I could be of some assistance. Maybe that little duckbill filter still has a little crud in. You can also drain the float bowls, always a bit of stuff in there as well.

I thought of that, but I wasn't sure how easy it was. Is it anything more than just unscrewing that little screw on the bottom of each of the carb and letting it drain? If not, then how particular are they about the torque putting the screws back in? I wouldn't be able to use my torque wrench in that little space.
