Hi guys n gals,
Just wanted to get your opinions on the wear rate of my "chain rubbing strip".
I put a new one on about 700 miles back while I was renewing chain and sprockets. I noticed today while lubing the chain that it is almost worn through already. My first thought was the chain was too tight but it measures within tolerence ( I could be reading it wrong!!). Now I think about it, the last rubbing strip didnt last too long either. What kind of mileage do you guys get before the clatter of chain on swingarm drowns out your exhaust note!! Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.
Cheers, BR900

Red-
Mine was only worn about half way through when I changed the chain/sprockets at 12,000 miles, so yours is definitely showing rapid wear. Did you put on an oversized rear sprocket by any chance? I have read that changes the angle of attack on the rub strip, and can eat them up quickly.

I don't know. 23,000 miles on mine and it's still good. Where is it worn, top or bottom?
I would have thought a too-slack chain would do more damage than a too-tight chain.

Hmm, sounds like something is not quite right. It's worn at the bottom, likewise the last time it got changed. I did the first one at about 15,000 miles (again with the chain and sprockets) and I guess the second one about 2000 miles ago, then the last one 700 miles ago. All sprockets and chain are standard Triumph items. I'm gonna take the little thumper off tomorrow and check it properly. Then it may call for some dealer input.

they wear on the bottom, and it will vary a lot dependant largely on load - i.e. how much weight you carry.2 up kills em. I got 10,000 from mine before I noticed wear - it wasn't down the swing arm but I replaced it as it was starting to break

My rubba thingie doohickey on the swingarm is almost buggered after approx 10,000klms, I do a fair bit of two up and overloaded touring though. Thinking about getting one fabbed up in polyurethane. Might extend the life a bit.
A thought Mick:would going one tooth larger on the countershaft sprocket make any difference?

Mine started to be in a bad shape at 10.000 km..
Then I went to a 18 front sprocket instead 17 and now at 30.000 it is still Ok

Thanks Mick, I think that might be the crux of the matter. I had a good poke around at it today and figured that the combination of frequent 2 up riding and the super low suspention height i had set must be causing premature wear. I upped the rear shock to almost max and re-adjusted the chain with pinpiont accuracy. See how we get on with that. Ill stick a new one on at the end of the month.

My guess is that it may reduce wear a little. A smaller sprocket will of course have the opposite tendancy
