I am a new TBS owner. Been riding most of my life but this is my first Triumph. I'm experiencing a fluctuation in the idle speed and have determined that the throttle cable adjustment at the carbs has to be incorrectly assembled. Just bumping the cable can cause a change in behavior. I have (top to bottom) an adjusting nut, a locknut, the top of a brass clip, the cable guide, the bottom of the brass clip, and then the lower locknut. The clip and the cable guide are both open so that when the locknuts are loose the cable can be pulled out. Not a very secure assembly. It appears the bottom locknut should be inside the brass clip and snugged up to the bottom of the cable guide. Can someone tell me for sure how it is supposed to be assembled or if I might have some other problem? Should the brass clip be to the rear in front of the clip?

I am not sure about the connection at the carb end, but have you checked for free play in the throttle? You need to have a little free play, without it all sorts of weird things can happen when you move the bars.
It is more usual to adjust the cable at the handlebar end.

If you don't have the Haynes Manual, Triples and Fours (carburettor engines) '91 to '99, then you should get a copy. In section 1.15 they give a good description of checking for throttle freeplay, to include what Slinky mentioned, and they tell you how to do an adjustment with the arrangement you wrote about. Your arrangement sounds like it might be correct to me, but you can tell better by reading it and doing the task. HTH.

That's the way the stock assembly goes together, but I threw away that da*mn brass clip about the 10th time I had the carbs off. I'm a lot happier without it.
The symptom sounds like you don't have enough free play in the cable. Try backing off the adjustment at the handgrip first and see if that works.

Thanks for all the help. I have the Haynes manual and it doesn't show a clear picture of the cable connection at the carbs. Anyway, I have the correct play in the throttle. That isn't my problem. The carbs were overhauled at the dealer before I bought the bike just a few months ago. I believe I need a new cable and possibly a fuel/air mix check. Thanks again. Cheers.
