I asked about this at the twin forum but thought i'd increase my responses by posting it here since it's a universal question. I want to pack my thunderbike pipe baffles on my speedmaster with Moose silent sport packing. I have 2 questions..

1)-the baffles are about 10-12" long. (the part that needs wrapping) I've been told everything from it shouldn't affect performance to it will hurt the low end but help the top. What do YOU think?

2)-anyone know how much packing you get here? Enough to do the tpipes ya think?

Have you asked the guys at Thunderbike?

Send them an email and ask.

Yes, but i wouldn't take one person's opinion. I have found in dealing with them they know no more than people here about many things concerning thier pipes. They told me no increase of air intake would make my bike stronger with thier pipes because of the different cam than all the other twins. yet i removed the snorkel and got a huge power boost. I told them and they tried it and were suprised in a big way ! So i don't consider thier opinion any better or worse than anyone here. just another opinion. Therefore i'm asking in hopes getting several answers that hopefully together give me an idea at least.

What is the purpose of doing this? I'm assuming that the pipes are new since your bike is an 05.

Also, what snorkel?

Pipes are aftermarket freer flowing and the snorkel is an airbox iten which when removed gives quite a power boost.

There's no way to tell what the effect will be from the information given.

In general, hard packing will effectively increase the length of the exhaust pipe which will shift the exhaust tuning down the rpm range while soft packing will shift the resonance up the rpm range.

No, but I'm curious as to whether that's the new ceramic material that's replaced fiberglass in a lot of applications.

yes, i believe i read it's partially ceramic, tho can't recall what the rest was. By the way, your notion that soft packing will shift the emphisis on performance up the rpm range coincides with what a guy at a bike shop told me. he said it'll sacrifice some low end but add to the top.

What exactly is the proper procedure for repacking mufflers? I got a set of Emgos recently and decided to wrap the baffles with steel wool as they were extremely loud and had minimal sound deadening. I wrapped the baffle entirely, is this wrong? Any suggestions on better sound deadening they are still obnoxiously loud? Thanks Fbird

I used some fibreglass from housing insulation [a bradford bat], but I think that it has lost its matting and blown out as fibres etc. Mty pipes are very loud again now. So I guess I'm in the market for some other purpose built product that works and lasts.

The pipes also had some original material [that looked the same as the stuff I used], it didn't last either.
