Well with close to 60k on her it was bound to happen. After a day of riding and with 70 miles of freeway ahead of me my throttle cable let go. This sort of mishap may have left a lesser man on he side of the road, blubbering about buying one of them nancy-boy Thruxtons with their fancy new cables. Your fearless author just wound the idle speed up to max and rode his 500# cafe racer home scooter-style at 60mph.

Did the same thing when mine broke, got a bit warm though from memory, the fans ran for a while after i got home. Must remember to pack my spare cable for the big trip next week. The annual Pilgrimmage to the Mecca of Motorcycle Racing in Australia. Phillip Island MotoGP, I'm excited.

Where did the cable break?
I'm thinking that an additional 'inspection area' would be worth adding to the 'checklist.'

It broke in the middle, nowhere you would be able to inspect it. The throttle had been a lot heavier to operate leading up to that, so that's a good indication your throttle cable is going to let go.

I used my finger on the top of the carb to get home when mine let go. Got a little hot!! You could also use the end of your screw driver to push down on it.
I now carry a spare.

I thought about those solutions but didn't fancy having to do that for an hour or so; doing the idle speed was a lot easier,
