Tonight the wife and I put a deposit down for her first big bike, a 95 tbird. A far cry from the rebel she's learned on.It was local, cheap under 3grand. Decked out with most of the accessory/parts catalog, high mileage kinda 21k, but well maintained and documented. On a strange note I've crossed paths with it 4 times. I saw it at 2 different dealers, a Brit bike rally, and the local fireworks last month. I guess it was meant to be. There are a few issues though, nology tach problems, bent clutch lever. But the only major thing I can find is the starter switch is gone... gone and replaced with a momentary toggle switch that is just hanging there. Is there a replacement for just that part or is the whole switch gear needed?
most of these problems are easily fixes thanks to this site Cheers. :-g
now if the search function was a little better than a rubber spanner I would be living the dream.

Don't think of 21k as high mileage, these things are pretty tough. Mine has 21k on it and it feels like it's just run in. Some people on this site have 70-80k on 'em.

There is a straightforward fix for the nology tach issue. The right side switchgear should be easy to source from a Jap bike breaker, or ebay. At most you might have to swap the connector plugs. You will not be able to buy individual components for these switches.

I agree 21K is not high milage in my book. I have a 2000 TBS with 19,500 miles on it (all mine I might add)
If it runs good and feel good riding it then it seems you are getting a good deal.
You should be able to find the correct parts to replace the "toggle" switch either new from a dealer or used on E-bay or one of the motorcycle salvage yards I've seenposted. Some one here can probably post a link to one of them.

Good Luck and happy riding.

I am on my 4th season riding my '02 and have over 21K on it and it runs better than new. The vibration between 3,000 and 3,300 RPM is gone. As for the switch, Slinky is right. I just priced a new switch and you have to buy the whole assembly which is about $180.00.

I realize that 21k is not real high mileage. My mind is stuck in a time before my birth. All my prior ujm's were under 15k and hell two were under 6k.My current bike , is approaching 13 rapidly as gas keeps going up. When I saw the recent thread on the longevity of these motors I was very impressed. The 2nd owner has taken great care of this bike and used it as a commuter 100 miles a day. 21k in the grand scheme isn't much but it is more miles than any other bike I've bought, thats all. Jaz

I had to replace the starter switch back in 2003, due to a little tip-over I had. The right hand switch setup ran about 130. When it happened to me, I got lucky with a shop had the setup in stock. You might be able to cross reference to the other manu's, but the difference will be the plug that you will find in the headlight housing that comes off the switch housing.

Hey guys thanks for the switch help. It seems a lot of parts interchange with the zx11. I already have zx11 adjustable levers on order for her. I lucked out last night there was sprint switch assembly on ebay. I just hope I didn't outbid a brother rat. I've also picked up some diodes for the tach. So when I pick her bike up tomorrow I can start fixing stuff right away. :hammer:
