After a series of setbacks since I bought my Tbird in Feb, my starter has gone TU. I was wondering if anyone had replaced a starter on a Tbird. I'm looking for some tips and pointers. **also: where is a good website to buy shop/repair manuals online**

It might just be a question of replacing the brushes, it's worth a shot.

Describe Dead..
Click sound ..,. solenoid\battery\starter brushes

Half turn then loud metallic clang,Half turn then loud metallic clang .... Sprag\Starter Clutch

no nothing ... clutch switch, starter button, kill switch etc...

Could be simple. Worth checking as new starters run $4 + hundred(think)

similar topic might help

As for the manual, got mine off amazon.com

If it's just brushes, check your local hardware store for replacement parts.

I've used electric drill brushes on a couple of old bikes that no longer had parts available. If you can't find the right size you can flat-sand larger ones to fit.

A starter from almost any other Triumph will fit. the unit is also used on many Japanese bikes; there fore they can be found on ebay quite easily and for relatively low cost.

I had a hard time finding brushes, but ended up buyubg a brush plate for a Kawasaki EX 500. The Brush plate could have been made to work, but I took the brushes off and soldered them to the Triumph brush plate and put it all back together...

Also, the area where the brushes ride on the stator was out of round, so I took some emery cloth and smoothed it all out.
I've since sold my TBS, but it's been about 20,000 miles ago since I repaired the starter and it's still going strong..
