have bought the extension, but *very* reluctant to start drilling holes. anyone have some advice on how to go about this without mishap?

Adam, had a look at the one on my 98 T Bird and can see your concern. If I was doing it I would take off the guard and line up the extension in place on a pile of rags or something that would not scratch. Perhaps use a contact glue to help hold in place. Then I would drill from the inside to the outer using the extension as the template.
Looks like small holes. I would clean the edges of the holes from the outside and bolt up. Maybe use some nail polish to seal the edges of the holes.
They look good.

cheers
Murray

In the past, some have used Liquid Nails or Silicone Caulking and forget the rivets. I have one of those extensions, Still in the drawer, I decided not to use it.

+1 on what Denny said.

There was no way I was going to drill holes in my new TBS, so I used a liberal amount of silicone adhesive and some rubber bands to hold things in place until it set.

That was nearly 6 years ago and like Denny, the rivets are still in the drawer
