squeek from rear wheel

Hi

Been a while since I last posted as the T'Bird has been running beautifully, thanks to all the help I have received here in the past. So, it's been the turn for nearly everything else in my life to break down or fall apart (thank god for blogs and forums). Now I'm on top of all that the T'Bird decided to give a little squeek from the back after I have been for a ride and I'm reversing it into its resting place. At first it was only in reverse now it also happens sometimes when going forward. Seems to only be after I have been riding. I'ver tracked it down to the axle/rear bearing area. The bike has only down 60000 ks which is about 38000 miles (I think) so I doubt it would need wheel bearings. I had the rear wheel removed by a motor car mechanic to repair the tyre some months back (small country service station middle of nowhere) and the noise may have started after that, although I can't be sure.
Has anyone had any experience like this?

Can you make the sound change by applying the rear brake pedal lightly? It is possible that the rear caliper is sticking, and you are hearing the pad rubbing on the disc. You could take it for a short ride, not touching the rear brake at all, and after coming to a stop using the front brake only, reach down and feel the rear disc to see if it is hot. You may also be able to hear it with the engine off, while you push it on a level surface while sitting on it.

Could also be a dry seal. Anytime you remove the wheel when refitting you should put a smear of good quality wheel bearing grease around the seal. Easy to check if its the brake just apply it a little as sevvy said, my brakes sqeak a fair bit, but its on its third set of disc rotors, and the last lot were very cheap.look to those seals and wheel bearings as well. Although none of mine have been replaced in 160,000klms.

Thanks for this.

I had already checked out the possibility of a brake pad rubbing and it wasn't what was causing it, but thanks for the suggestion. Sounds more like it is the seal as a spray of a light grade penetrating lubricant around the bearing axle area silences it for a short while. And the seal definitely wasn't lubricated when the wheel was taken off. So it looks like it has to come off again and be done properly.

Thanks once again, I'll get around to in the next week or so and get back to you if I still have problems.

Long live the TriumphRat.
