Nology Coil Question

I have been looking at Nology coils as replacements, but have not been able to find any definitive info on if they perform any better than Gills.
Nology makes all sorts of claims that they will increase horsepower, give me better fuel economy, make food taste better, etc, but do they?

They quote an output voltage of 45KV.

How does this compare with the Gills?

General consensus here of course is that they are less prone to failure. I think that is why most folks go to them.

For a given plug type & combustion conditions, it's the plug gap that determines what voltage the coil reaches, so what the coil can do 'open circuit' is not really relevant beyond a minimum needed to jump the gap. The total energy that the coil can deliver is more important - up to a point. Nology claim that their choice of turns ratio and core/material design delivers more spark energy. Hard to say whether that's true, but high performance in this technology is more at the centre of their business than for Gill, for example.

As Cafetbird says, most of us have fitted them for reliability reasons often after a stock coil failure. They certainly seem to meet expectations in that.

I replaced my Gills, even though they were still fine and only had about 7000 miles on them. My theory was to replace them while the Nologys were still available, as who can predict the future? I now have 3 Gills for emergency spares, or to share for testing. I have noticed no difference in the bike's running or performance, but I didn't buy them to increase the performance, just to safeguard against one of the more common weaknesses in these bikes.

I'm not sure that failure of the OEM coils is inevitable. Mine are 12 yrs old and have done 34,000 miles and they are fine. But then they are not Gill, they are the German brand (which I forget).

Several years ago I bought a spare set on ebay, just in case, and they are still sitting in my garage gathering dust. If I had not bought them, sods law dictates that one of the originals would have failed

PVL, and it's been said here that they make the coils for Nology.

Nology Coils

Before I replaced them, I had a really noticeable flat spot between 2000 and 4000 rpm (especially when riding 2 up). Based on one of the threads here on Rat.Net, I decided to replace the coils. The bike had almost 80K miles and the original coils were probably getting pretty tired.

I replaced the Gils with Nologys and got an immediate improvement. As soon as I put the new ones on the flat spot disappeared.

I don't know if they will improve performance if your original coils are like new, but if they are getting old and tired like mine were it can make a big difference.

same as ssevy i replaced them before gills let me down i also put nology leads on that was the only thing i changed and the first time it started easier and idled higher so as mike said i think that this is there core business so they are better qualitiy and later technology plus cheaper for all 3 than 1 gill

Anywhere better to buy Nology from than anywhere else?

Or anywhere that should be steered clear of?
