Clutch Drag

My 1996 T-bird has suffered from clutch drag for about a year. Finally, I opened things up and found that all the friction plates, steel plates, and inner and outer baskets were in "new" condition. Amazing with 42,000 miles.

Suspecting a master or slave cylinder issue, I measured the pressure plate throw which was a mere 2 mm. With about 17 discs, I was expecting maybe a 5 mm throw distance. Unfortunately the manual does not give specs for this.

Anybody know for sure what the throw measurement should be at the pressure plate?

Thanks much.

I'm afraid I don't know for sure, but I would have thought that 2mm at the clutch centre would be enough to prevent clutch drag. Does the bike "creep" when it's in gear with the clutch in?

clutch drag

The bike was not creeping at stop. Just a problem with cold starts.

This weekend I rebuilt the master and slave cylinders and that took care of the clutch drag. It appears that the rebuild have me 3 mm of throw at the pressure plate. Interesting. Anyway, thanks for getting back to me.

Had a similar problem since I fitted the new clutch in mine. I thought it was because I didn't soak the plates for long enough before fitting. I pulled it all apart and soaked them overnight this time. Still drags a little when cold. Will investigate kits for the master and slave cylinder shortly.
