Just picked up a used '98 TBS last week, 6,000KM's and absolutely mint.

Bike is red and black, identical to the red one in the beautiful lake picture in the photo album, except for not having the little fairing.

First impression is that it is an easy bike to ride, doesn't feel like its weight and looks great. Seems a little light on torque.

Anything special I should know? Regular gas or premium?

Howdy Trollie, congrats on the new ride. I believe the Owner's Manual will tell you to use 89 octane or higher. My bike does fine with that but I put Premium in it when I'm going to be riding in hot weather or heavily loaded.

As for light on torque, maybe you're just used to that S4. I know my bike will beat most bikes (of the folks I ride with) off the line - and it's bone stock. It's possible that someone has changed out the drive sprocket for one with more teeth (18 vs the stock 17). You might check that. The T3 engine makes it's peak torque around 4000-4800 RPM but it makes power all the way up to the redline.

Hang around...I'm sure folks will have plenty of good advice for you.

Got to go for a 150km ride tonight....sweet. Winds out really nice, she does.

Can anyone recommend a nice, smallish fairing like the one in the last pic in the TBS album?

hi trollie,
low on torque?mine has more torque than anything else i have owned.
its a great bike that one.i have a small screen on mine.it adds about 10 mph to the top speed.get some triumph loud pipes, then it sounds like a real bike and hides all the whirring sounds.
bought mine new.it was being sold at a main dealer for £4600.the list price at the time was £7300.too good to miss.
best of luck with it..geoff :hammer: :hammer: :hammer:

Thanks Geoff. My last two cars were a Jag XJR and a MB SL500....so I'm used to major torque.

I'd never change the exhaust....the three into two are the coolest looking system i've seen....performance be damned.

hi trollie,
the exhaust i mentioned are the triumph loud pipes, marked, not for road use.they are identical in appearance to the stock item.
they are straight through silencers.
if you look in the standard silencers, they have a plate about 6 inches down.
the sound is awesome with the open pipes. :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: geoff

My friend has a '98 TBS also, and -unfortunately- the TOR pipes are no longer manufactured. You'll have to find a second-hand set. D&D makes a 3 into 3 setup, or Thunderbike has told him they will make him a set of 3 into 2 or 3 into 1. Good luck. They are beautiful bikes.
